If you're applying for Art foundation year at UAL/Kingston, is there any point in applying for degree course at those Unis at the same time?

My daughter would like to do an art foundation year at UAL or Kingston (2026/2027) and then go on to do a degree in art, possibly in UAL or Kingston or maybe somewhere else.

Is there any point in applying for a degree course at these unis at the same time as she is applying for the foundation year?

If she gets rejected for the foundation year is it possible she could be accepted for the degree course?

My gut feeling says it's unlikely but I don't really know.

Can anyone advise on this?
Thanks.

I’d give it a go. However you need to find out if they truly recruit with A levels and portfolio only or are pretty much recruiting from the foundation. My DD did another course at UAL (LCF) and she got in with her portfolio and A levels. Often foundation is about doing the portfolio anyway. Can DD manage a first class portfolio at school? Has she good advice in this? UAL used to offer a portfolio advice service and it’s worth having a chat on what they want to see.

Thanks for your reply.
I don't think they pick people for the degree course purely based on having done the foundation year there, just based on the numbers.

The foundation year has 500 students (I believe) whereas the degree course has several thousand per year (though that's based on googling that the total student population is over 20k).

I guess my fear is that if they don't select anyone for the degree course who they rejected for the foundation year, then putting them on the UCAS form is a wasted option.

I will try contacting them but not sure they will give a simple yes or no answer as there may be some exceptions.
I'll try and talk to the art teachers in her school as well.

@ArtyShmarty I don’t think that degree has. 2000 on it. The course prospectus should give exact numbers. It might be 200. How difficult is the course to get into? I’d ask them about direct recruitment from A level and why would she be rejected from the Foundation? Most dc aren’t. They aren’t that competitive. However no harm in asking the admissions of both universities.

I've just been to the open day at Central Saint Martin's and the lady who runs the fine art course gave a talk and pretty much said they don't take A level students, even though it doesn't explicitly say that on the entry requirements on their website.

You must have a pre degree course like a foundation year.
She said A level students portfolio won't be strong enough and of those who have got in over the years, many have struggled to make the transition.

@ArtyShmarty Has she looked at other degrees or must it be Art? Is that fine art?

It must be art. If she gave any inkling of wanting to do anything else I would support her 100% but she is very keen to do fine art.

I know this is an old thread but my DS got offered Fine Art - Painting at UAL Camberwell just on A'levels. He decided he wanted to do full on Fine Art so did the Foundation Course at our local college. He started at UAL Chelsea in September and is loving it. Feel free to PM me with any questions if she gets in @ArtyShmarty
