Just wondering sparked by other threads ,has bath managed to accommodate people or are they also suddenly springing on students that they can't get on site and have to pay extra ?

Nearly happened to my DD for 2024 entry (it was her insurance). We were initially told she would have to do a gap year as no accommodation was available (we couldn’t have afforded private, but she wouldn’t have wanted that anyway), and would be put on the waiting list. Very stressful month not knowing what was happening. Ended up being offered shared bathroom, off- campus accomodation , which after some deliberation, she ended up just going for. However, she absolutely loved her first year and was surrounded by other freshers who had been in the same situation. Hopefully it’s been less stressful for young people this year.

I can say, however, that University of Bath is a fab uni with great student support in our experience apart from this one incident. I also think this was only due to it being her insurance and I have not heard of firm offer holders experiencing this (all her flatmates who had been in this scenario also had Bath as their insurance).

Bath have a lot of non-campus but uni managed accommodation. They do not have space for all first years on campus. But this is different to being forced to rent with a private provider.

@jennygeddes really ? I don't remember being told this on the open day

Being on campus is very much part of why DD wants it

The Bath website has all the information about accommodation options. It is a mix of city and campus accommodation. You can see which is which here: https://www.bath.ac.uk/corporate-information/undergraduate-accommodation-prices/

Students pick 7 options and are advised to make that a mix of campus, city, en-suite and shared options. My DD did this, had Bath as her firm choice and still didn’t get any of her 7! She is going to be on campus but it’s definitely a bit of a lottery as to whether you get any of your choices. There are several others from her school going who also didn’t get allocated anything they’d chosen.

I don’t think City vs Campus makes a great deal of difference in the long run. We know of others who were in the city last year who still had a great time and loved their first year. Plus Bath city centre is a pretty beautiful place to live!!
