Gift for DD starting PhD

FreshPrincessOfYorkshire · 31/08/2025 01:06

My DD23 is starting her PhD at the end of September and I am looking for any ideas of a practical gift to get her. Starting it big deal as she’s leaving our home city for the first time for it, she’s autistic and loves routine and familiarity. She has to move institutions during it for various trainings so don’t want to get her something that isn’t useful/practical in some way as it’ll only take up space in her suitcase. Any ideas?

How lovely, congrats to your daughter!

What's your price range? A diary might be practical. Papier have some gorgeous ones you can personalise.

Anything up to £50ish? Obviously not going to break the bank, and she’s very specific about her techy stuff (I helped her move last week and got far too much information about what each bit of her PC does😂) so staying away from that. A diary is a good shout, I’ll have a look at the papier ones.

I think the gift is as much for me to feel better about her going as her to be fair, she’s only moving to the other side of the peaks but it feels further ☹️

These are great little books - what is her PhD title?

Pepperama · 31/08/2025 01:23

Has she got a decent, lightweight laptop? Nice cosy new bedding or one of those electric throws for when she’s doing lots of reading and writing and gets a bit chilly? New backpack? Gym or another club membership?

Pepperama · 31/08/2025 01:24

Ah sorry, cross post with the updated price range. But some of these might fit that budget

I like this series too but it'll be way way too simple if she's about to start a PhD. They're about A Level standard.

Like the cosy theme though. Especially as it's getting cooler. What about nice PJs, a silk eye mask and a hot water bottle? Then you can feel like you're giving her a hug from across the Peaks 😊

@FreshPrincessOfYorkshire

Noise cancelling headphones

May be too bulky, but cosy blanket for those interminable late nights.

Many congratulations to your daughter, undertaking a PhD is a mammoth task.

She (fingers crossed) has a laptop sorted. Been a bit of a mare as she got one a month ago and then had to deal with sending it back as faulty. I like the backpack idea, now you mention it her jansport has been through the wars in the last 10 years and could possibly do with an upgrade

Without being too outing (whilst being an insanely proud mum 🤪) she’s going to be researching nuclear waste.

Deliveroo voucher so she can be a bit spontaneous and have whatever she fancies without cooking while she first settles in?
One of those timed daylight lamps that wakes you up like it’s morning? Nice to wake gently on the dark mornings.
Weighted blanket (for feeling hugged if it’s all a bit stressful)
Some sort of little coffee pod device with some pods (if she drinks coffee obvs). Saw a portable one that looked like genius, don’t know if they’re actually any use.
A dynamo label printer. I’m mid-forties and I still think I only really became an adult when I got one of these.

I met DH at a conference on nuclear waste disposal, erm, a long time ago, as I was finishing up my PhD. He was an incoming MSc student.

A good thermal mug?
Academic year planner/diary (Waterstones have some lovely ones).
Will she be doing field work? Boots, hat, warm socks etc?

Oh, brilliant. Then a copy of the Finnish documentary 'Into Eternity ' and information about a trip to Onkalo. If not Finland (£50 budget! ) then a trip to the BGS - they have an amazing site and you can visit.
Probably most useful would be a voucher for Go Outdoors or similar. Or a great head torch - always useful!

RealPearlDuck · 01/09/2025 09:56

Maybe a personalized planner with family photos or pictures of her and her friends here and there? It would help her with the routine and also remind about people she loves.
Good portable charger is always a must as well, so could be a good idea too https://www.theguardian.com/thefilter/2025/apr/10/best-power-banks-portable-chargers-battery-uk

Congratulations - how exciting!

A lovely notebook (I am an academic, you can never have too many - my go to is A5 lined)
A good laser pointer for her presentations
Cashmere wrist warmers for those long winter writing nights
Contigo for spill-proof one-handed caffein supply on the go
A book of Piled Higher and Deeper (PhD) comics - she will need the humour!

CutFlowers · 01/09/2025 10:17

I would look at one of those 'How to get a PhD type books'. It can be a bit overwhelming at first.

FreshPrincessOfYorkshire · 02/09/2025 20:17

Thanks for all your suggestions, in the end I decided to get her a new back-pack as hers is falling to pieces. Got her the north face never stop bag, she’s not a brand person but this bag has an extra pocket at the bottom she can put her lunch etc in.
