Anyone want to chat about this? My daughter is heading up soon to study English. We are currently working on a list of things she will need...and the 6 administrative tasks they've set.

She's in catered halls. She seems to have made contacts already via Instagram!

We're taking DD up on Sat. Sorry to hear about the car @gerbo. Not good timing! Hope it works out. Good tip about free sanitary products @HydrangeaRose although have already stockpiled some. Where are they available from?

DD is self catering and likes to cook and I think has far too much kitchen stuff. We may end up bringing some back!

every high street pharmacy for the free sanitary . They have designated shelves with all the most popular brands etc . Also in all the student buildings in the loos as well .

Wow that's v impressive re the sanpro. I will tell dd.

Do most people take their children out for a last dinner on the Saturday or does the university put something on? Does anyone know?

We are staying overnight on Saturday and have left it open that DD is very welcome to come out for dinner with us, but if a better offer appears, no worries. I think there are a few events listed on the uni events app, but she's not keen on booking anything in advance until she's met flatmates etc. Not sure if that's usual or not.

gerbo · 02/09/2025 18:29

Thanks, PartoftheBand. I think we will do that.

There is an event for parents and supporters on Sunday at noon in the McEwan Hall. Will be a chance to hear about support for your students. Should be in the events app

My dd says that if you’re going to Edinburgh from the South you will probably need good walking shoes and a new raincoat. And absolutely everywhere you need to go will be uphill, wherever you’re starting from. The vintage clothes shops are amazing, particularly Armstrongs. And the Teviot Place Ting Thai is really really good.

Thanks all.
Sadly we have to start the vvv long journey home on Subday quite early, to be back for dog and sibling, so will miss the chat.
Good advice re raincoat! My daughter has a cagoule, bomber jacket and warm coat but may end up needing a serious waterproof!

Has everyone done drop-off now?!

We are driving home. Halls seemed lovely, cosy, and moving in was relatively smooth....

Strange to leave her this morning, I'm in shock a bit, I think!

I had to stop after a hour to cry. A lot. Still remember the awfulness after 12 years. Hope you’re OK.

We've dropped DD but glad we had a night up there & bit more time to get her settled. Unfortunately her halls are not particularly cosy - in fact pretty shabby and run down for the price! But she's already spoken to several people, been to couple of hall-organised events & explored the city a bit. It was very sad leaving her & suspect we have may a few hurdles to overcome in next few weeks & months - not least lecturers' strikes. I'm really hoping the welcome events, or at least some of them, go ahead this week!

PartoftheBand, where is she? We were in Lee House, Pollock, and it was v simple, bit dated, but clean.

Edinburgh uni accommodation can be a bit grim (I remember my DSes cruelly contrasting my DDs 1st year room on family WhatsApp with a picture of the cell for someone who had just been jailed for life (the cell was nicer). DD who lived in halls for 3 years would say location and flatmates over tired decor in a heartbeat.
