Scottish uni - if haven’t met grades is it worth applying anyway?

How exactly do they follow the grade requirements at for university applications in Scotland? DD is just starting 6th year at secondary school in Scotland. She got AAABB at higher s5. She is going another higher and 2 AH in 6th year. She is doing her ucas application this year. The course she wants to apply to requires AAAAA, in one sitting. Is it worth her applying anyway? Would she get a conditional, or is it more likely to be an outright no? She doesn’t want to waste a possible choice on an outright no. But she is keen for this uni (Edinburgh)

She should probably speak to the UCAS coordinator at her high school if there is one.
I know of a student who has been accepted to Glasgow university for a course where the criteria was 5 As in one sitting. He got 3 As, a B and a C in 5th year, then got 3 As in 6th year (one a resit of the lower grade).
He's been accepted now.

It depends on the course and if it's oversubscribed. It sounds like it might be?

Is your dd eligible for a contextual offer?

There's no harm in applying and seeing what happens, whilst also listing a solid back up option that she will meet the requirements for.

Edinburgh publishes admission stats on their website so you can see how competitive the course is (might be worth waiting for the 2025 ones as it can change from year to year). Also there is a calculator to check whether you qualify for a widening access flag (used to be 2 levels). At the September open day you could meet admissions staff and they can ook up more detailed stats for you. They gave my DD a percentage chance based on her grades. Check whether course was in clearing for Scottish students this year too as this might indicate a better chance of a conditional (or a place thru clearing iwith good S6 results). Not so easy to game as selection is by degree group.

thanks, I had a look at the admissions success rate. 28%. So pretty competitive. Not sure whether it’s worth her applying. There is no chance of a widening access place. Postcode and school, although not amazing, are not bad either.

One of mine took a punt at StA (11%) and Edinburgh (20%) and got one Edinburgh. However she was pretty sure of an offer for her 3rd choice (and was happy with it too).

Is she willing to consider other unis? DD loved Edinburgh the city but says course/outcome probably similar at Glasgow/Strathie/Aberdeen.

Go to open day and speak to admissions as pp suggested
