Hi everyone have started a new thread since the last one from End of Year 13: Results, Summer and plans for September and onwards has finally got to page 20, and the thread has now ended. To our DC, well done for getting through first year of uni, and hope you are enjoying the summer and hope year 2 is as good one. To all who took a gap year last year, hope your first year is just as fabulous.
Apologies in advance if someone has already created a thread; I couldn’t see one. So if there is one please share the link below

DD still struggling. Things were better in September and early October but her mental health still isn’t great. But she did see her senior tutor and a counsellor today and that seems to have gone well. I would love her to be happy but hopefully she will get there at some point.

MrsAvocet · 28/11/2025 23:14

Sorry to hear that @MirandaWest though it does sound like things are moving slowly in the right direction for her. It must be a terrible worry for you though. I hope you have a lovely Christmas break and that 2026 brings happier times.

Well done to your DD on the placement @ShanghaiDiva - sounds like a brilliant opportunity and with the graduate jobs market so tough at the moment it should give her a head start.

MrsPengiuins · 28/11/2025 23:58

Thanks @MrsAvocet Glad things are going well for your DS and that you will all be together for Christmas.

Well done on your DDs placement @ShanghaiDiva

Hope things improve for your DD @MirandaWest

I think DD will be home for about 6 weeks. Not sure what plans she has other than rowing here on the first day back and Christmas here. She just had Oxmas and has her ball tomorrow. Had a friend from school over for dinner last week. Rowing everyday. We hear lots about rowing and socialising but nothing about the course. She got through the y1 exams OK though.

@MirandaWest sending strength to you, must be very challenging.

Lovely news on some of the placements - they sound amazing 😊

Sure we are all looking forward to full nests again at Christmas. I’m sure they’ll be driving me mad again after a few weeks though 😂

DD is beavering away - has completed one essay this week and has another two due in by next Friday 🙄. I’m super impressed with her - she still lacks self confidence but it’s much improved, she’s getting there. I paid for a takeaway for her tonight as she is just shattered and has to push on to finish the other two essays in the next 10 days.

DD is back on 13th and DS on 15th, with his girlfriend. Can’t wait!

IThinkImAMathmoMum · 02/12/2025 21:08

That sounds tough @MirandaWest hope things start to improve for your DD soon.

Well done to your DD on her placement @ShanghaiDiva

DS has nearly finished term. He was horribly ill with a rotten bug (high temperature, cold symptoms etc) a couple of weeks ago and I was quite worried (at one point he messaged to say he had collapsed when he got up to get a drink of water) but he managed to rest up and get better. Unfortunately it seemed to really throw his sleep schedule off (which he had been struggling with anyway) and I don't think he has made it to many lectures since then. He will have a lot of work to catch up with in the holidays including a couple of projects which are due in January.

I feel like time is speeding up and it is going so quickly. Next term DS will have half way dinner to celebrate the midpoint of his course!

DD home -or at least someone who looks like her as she seems to have had a bit of a personality transplant.

Came looking for her passport to fill in an application for the British Council Learning Assistant scheme - only the admin stuff, not the more difficult personal statement but still -it's a start and completely without nagging!

Has booked a visit to the dental hygienist.

Most astonishing of all - volunteered to cook a chicken curry this weeekend, the ingredients of which include ACTUAL VEGETABLES.

Lightsabre · 20/12/2025 18:04

Sorry to hear about your dd @mirandawest,hopefully a bit of time with you at home will help.

@hpfa,that made me laugh, they’re definitely maturing.

Ds is really busy revising for exams with a bit of socialising thrown in. He’s only giving himself a few days off. Not much luck on the intern applications but he hasn’t really put in loads which I’ve heard you do need to. It’s very time consuming. If he doesn’t get anything then he’s planning quite an adventurous trip with his friends.

ShanghaiDiva · 05/01/2026 18:14

Happy new year!
dd is with us until 12th January: assessment week, followed by week’s break and semester two starts on 2nd Feb.
Does everyone have January exams?

MrsAvocet · 05/01/2026 18:55

Happy New Year to you @ShanghaiDiva
My DS had exams before Christmas which was a bit of a pain at the time but at least it meant that he could relax over the holidays. He is going back in the next couple of days. Lectures don't start until 19th I think but he has project work and sports to do. Not to mention a local girlfriend...
I'll be back to having 2 students from next week as my elder DS is starting an MSc. Different University to where he did his Bachelor's so it's a big change, but nearer to home which makes things a bit easier. Oh, and I've gained a grandchild over the holidays so it has been all go here!
Hope everyone else has had a good time and enjoyed having their DC home.

IThinkImAMathmoMum · 05/01/2026 19:21

Happy new year to all and congratulations on the grandchild @MrsAvocet

No exams for DS until the summer but two projects due in at the beginning of term which are not finished yet so there has been a fair amount of work he has had to do during the holidays (and quite a lot of procrastination!) We did have a nice Christmas together and saw family so a bit of a break. Hopefully he can get them done before he goes away with friends for a couple of days next week. He moves back into his room Saturday 17th but he didn't have to clear it completely this year so he left a few things (crockery etc) there over the holidays.

ShanghaiDiva · 05/01/2026 20:35

@MrsAvocet - congratulations !

sammyjoanne · 16/01/2026 20:04

@MirandaWest hope your daughter is ok x @MrsAvocet congratulations ☺️ @ShanghaiDiva congrats on the placement

DD2 Oregon placement for June-august fell through. The company gave her an internship in October, flights booked and paid for, went to apply for j1 visa only to then be told ‘’ we are not a sponsor sorry’’ Apparently the placement organiser had no clue they had to fill a jr190 form and sevis registration. Fortunately we got the money back from BA but it was still gutting for her. Her year Australia placement at Australia zoo however is a go ahead and she’s got her visa for the year and flights are booked for September. So we’re prepping getting things together for that.
DD1 has now got a teaching role at Manchester uni alongside her degree. So she’s happy getting extra cash in as well as her stipend.
