Graduate scheme cancelled and job withdrawn a month before start date

Morning everyone

DS has just graduated and was offered a job back in March, was really looking forward to starting next month and they’ve phoned him this week and said they’re cancelling the graduate scheme for this year. Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen too as I haven’t come across it before? Maybe a sign of the times.

Obviously they will have had good reason (presumably financial - in which case I’ve told him there’ll be staff in worse positions than him) but I feel so sorry for him. He was really looking forward to starting and was genuinely excited about the role. The short notice means he’s also missed out on the opportunity to apply for any other graduate roles in the same area as they’ll have been filled now. Instead he’s stuck at home with us while his friends all go off to start their new adventures 😢 and having to start again.

i just wondered if anyone else has had this happen too - I hope not but would be good to get some feedback/advice etc. obviously he’s been in touch with his uni tutor but I guess I’m hoping someone will tell me this happened to their son/daughter and it all worked out for the best 🤞

Sorry to hear this OP, that's bad timing indeed.
He should definitely mention what happen in future interviews though - he was good enough to be offered the job and it was withdrawn for reasons unrelated to him. Good luck.

So pleased for you and your ds op

HNRTT but if his brudges are burnt with the employer and they have a decent reputation then perhaps see it as a negotiation opportunity. Contact their scheme manager and point out the reputational risk of cancellation at this stage and a derisory offer of a day's pay for graduates who and whose parents have a vast network, including as customers of the firm (if they're a professional services firm then they'll be frightened of little Jimmy's mum having a decisive role in their next £m contract). No threats that will be seen as unprofessional more implications. Ask them to consider and to come back with their best offer on how to make this right, defer entrance until next year, lean on one of their suppliers for an opportunity, sponsorship for a masters or a full notice period. Dont suggest anything but leave it to them. Works better if their are a big professional services firm, not at all if they don't care. I've seen it work well when most graduates just go away.

Good luck.
