How do you get into Town Planning?

DS is 24, has a First in Graphic Design from a reasonable uni but has had all but no luck in finding work. He’s considering a change of direction, as above.

He has an AS in Geography (A grade), A* in a GD A level; and a 2 A level equivalent BTEC in graphic communication (top marks), plus solid GCSEs in Maths, Sciences etc.

Any ideas how he might go about getting into Town Planning?

Thanks for any ideas.

@MsPengiuns Yes good salaries and pensions if you can get one. Value for the taxpayer? Obviously not.

I work as a local authority planning officer. In the last two years we have employed four new junior planning officers with no prior planning knowledge - 3 wanting a career change and one recent geography graduate. If your son is prepared to move just about anywhere in the country he should be able to find a job in planning fairly easily. I would recommend starting in local government to get a good grounding in understanding the planning system. He can always try private consultancy work later on. I wouldn't advise doing a masters in planning at this stage.

Again, thanks very much. Any other contributions also very welcome!
