Dd is hoping to study economics in 2026. Some unis require TMUA and she plans on sitting for the October sitting. I was wondering if anyone had good links to any resources to help her prepare. School won’t be able to advise and as it is she has very poor FM teaching, which seems to be such a risk for her results. Teacher seems to be on some type of performance management. She is predicted a* for economics and A A for maths and FM. She got a 9 and 8 (five marks off a 9) so should get these marks at least (maths teaching, notwithstanding).

It is more getting used to seeing the questions and the answers listed as it is multiple choice. Here is a walk through of a past paper, she can pause it (she has to be fast as he starts solving it immediately, or slow down the playback speed) and see if she knows where she would start, what her process would be.

Ds1 sat TMUA but it is a long time ago. Ds2 is at Warwick studying Economics. He says despite having to get an A star in maths to get in there seems to be students who cannot handle the maths content of year 1 so I think that might be partly why Warwick are now requesting entrance exams.

For your DD's summer, try Maths and Physics website for lots of resources. I know this was highly regarded when DCs were both doing maths and further maths A levels. https://www.physicsandmathstutor.com/maths-revision/

My dd is a Warwick but studying another subject, economics is tough, it's really a maths degree, unless your dd is crazy about maths and loves it I would give it a second thought.

My ds who has an 8 in GCSE FM and was advised to not take FM A level because it's unlikely he would achieve a top grade is hoping to go to Bristol to study Economics and Finance, he is predicted A star, A star, A and the offer is AAA. He has 11 GCSE's all 9 and 8's. He was rejected from Manchester with the above for Economics and Finance. This gives you an idea of how competitive it is.

They may have looked at his predictions and considered him more likely to choose Imperial or Oxbridge over them.

@ he hasn't taken FM A level so couldn't apply to any high tariff economics courses including Bristol so went for Economics and finance instead. I think he was rejected from Manchester due to an "average" PS with no stand out features. Bristol don't read PS if you have good GCSE's / predictions.

Hi, OP -

These are good resources, above.

In addition the charity MEI has some free TMUA resources on their website. They also have two free online events coming up. The one in Sept us for those taking TMUA in Oct and the one in Nov is for those taking TMUA early next year.

The Advanced Maths Support Network may or may not have the archived TMUA materials of the former Further Maths Support Network (again free). Otherwise hopefully MEI has them.

I cannot get the links at MEI to work properly. I intended ro make a PSA about their resources earlier but was put off by this. I hope you can.

Best wishes to DD

The Big Book of Oxbridge Applications by UniAdmissions has some great practice questions with step-by-step answers that your child can use to get some practice.

This is the website for the course @poetryandwine mentioned.
https://mei.org.uk/event/
Then look for Online course for the TMUA.

Oh wow - thank-you lovely people! That’s all so helpful and hopefully will put DD in good stead!

She is very set on economics. I have a dd awaiting y13 results with maths being one also, so have lived and breathed it this this year also. The back to back year 12 and 13 has not been fun!

R2Drew2 on you tube is brilliant. They go through past papers, have written their own papers and I think have videos on topics as well.

AMSP/MEI provides online tuition if from a state school. They have just reintroduced it after it was stopped after funding changes but may well be full for the sessions before the october sitting but worth a look.

The papers are very tight for time so speed is vital and candidiates are given a whiteboard book for workings which slowed some people down. Also log on as soon as it opens to book. We waited until lunchtime on the first day and the nearest centre we could get was 30 plus miles away as all the close ones were fully booked.
