Laptop for Diagnostic Radiography & iPad for notes?

DuckDuckGoosieGander · 18/07/2025 12:26

DD starts uni doing Diagnostic Radiography in September. She qualifies for DSA and has been offered a choice of a few laptop upgrades.

I know nothing about laptops and would appreciate any advice on a general good spec for uni please? Also if anyone studies DR and has advice on what they need that would also be appreciated.

DD has mentioned students using iPads to make notes and wondered what type of iPad might be required too?

re the iPad and notes: basic iPad is fine (128gb wifi model) with an app such as Nebo. Cost would be about £275 for the iPad, £80 for the pencil, and £10 for Nebo.
I use that setup (with a sketching app and a mind map app at work for notes etc rather than paper notebooks now). Oh and £20 for a case with magnetic keyboard off Amazon.

My daughger has an iPad Pro, pencil and keyboard so it can be as useful as a laptop.

SecretFerret · 20/07/2025 11:58

I would recommend these as hard copy. My university provided iPads for placement, worth checking (Exeter)

Also, we had online image exams and simulated learning and I found a large screen really useful for this.

Thank you @WhatdoIkno@SecretFerret@LaLaLandDreamsthat’s all very helpful. No iPad is provided by uni so we will need to purchase that before she starts. Thanks also for the book recommendations.

Our uni also provided us with x- ray markers but a few sets are useful as you tend to lose them very easily! Also, theatre shoes. Crocs with no holes are good, no splashing on your socks (hip replacements can be very gory).

@SecretFerretThanks for your recommendations which we’ve looked at. DD is now telling me she thinks she’s squeamish - she used to love watching all the hospital programmes and originally wanted to be a paramedic. I’m worrying now that she’s going to struggle with the gory side!

DD is currently in the middle of her hospital placements.

Students get a choice of which hospitals to do them in., but they have to cover all aspects of diagnostic imaging: x-ray, CT scans, PET scans, MRI scans, ultrasound, nuclear medicine and fluoroscopy.

She has had a placement in A and E, seen advanced cancer in children and witnessed a patient being abusive to a member of staff.

However, none of it has been gory.

I've just finished the degree and had three clinical placements. I've seen surgery involving lots of blood ( including the need to wash down the c-arm afterwards), as well as severed digits, open fractures, lacerations with foreign bodies in, as well as poo, snot, vomit etc. I've witnessed two patients pass away. It would not be fair to give the impression your child will not face gore and other unpleasant things. BUT the support provided to expect and cope with this was very good.
