When to ask to defer university place

My DD has an unconditional uni offer for September which she has accepted, but she has decided for various reasons that she would prefer to go in September 2026.

What is likely to happen if she asks to defer this unconditional place? I imagine the options include:

They say “yes, no problem”
They say “you’ll need to reapply next year”
They say “you have to wait until results day before we decide”

Does anyone have any advice on when the best time to ask for this would be: now or after results day?

Very uni and course dependent. Usually one of the first two replies.

Deferral is really common and we don't even bat an eyelid. There are so many reasons for it. We'd rather see you defer than lose an offer holder! Call the uni to ask (or rather get your DD to do it). If she's already UF, she can do it now.

Sorry - UF is 'unconditional firm'.

Sometimes the more over-subscribed courses tend not to agree to a deferral. However PPs are correct that most places are desperate for students (with their lovely course fees etc) so would likely agree

Depends if the course is maths heavy where a lot of unis don’t like gap years due to knowledge loss.

Thanks, everyone. I’ll get her to contact them, much appreciated insights.

Good advice above, OP. Further to @mumofthree22 ’s post, I would add that if the course is maths-intensive, odds of having the request granted will be increased if DD has a realistic plan for keeping up her maths (that she should stick to, for her own sake)
