Anyone with a DC at Keele University

DC has put this as their firm choice. It looks like a great campus but a little small. Has anyone had a dc go there & how did they like it?

Thanks :)

They was asked to put their courses and interests in the housing application, and was placed with people their exact opposite, was not a great 1st year for them. But almost at graduation and doesn't deflect from the uni courses of course, and the campus is gorgeous,

Thanks everyone - it looks to be a very impressive campus and dc immediately got good vibes from it.

We were surprised that it seems quite far down the league tables (dc’s other offers were much further up the league table scale but after visiting Keele, feels it is the one for them so fingers crossed they are right! )

It’s one of only 15 in the country with the Gold Tef Award - that comes from students and not ranking on research and money!

TizerorFizz · 30/05/2025 03:42

Research universities are the best though. All world leading ones are top notch for research. You cannot teach what you don’t know @Pieceofpurplesky. Research matters.

@Phonicfail Whether Keele is any good or not really depends on which degree and career afterwards. It’s where it is in league tables for a reason. It’s not hugely popular and the estate doesn’t make up for other shortcomings. What other universities was she interested in?

RayonSunrise · 30/05/2025 09:08

@TizerorFizzThat’s definitely not true! I work with a former engineering prof from a very big name uni who came to the private sector and now creates canned lectures for engineering lecturers at RG unis because they don’t have time to plan or create their own. They teach what industry gives them to read out loud so they can put all their time into research.

Pieceofpurplesky · 30/05/2025 14:07

@TizerorFizzthere is plenty of research at Keele, just not the stuff that is counted on the RG list!

TizerorFizz · 30/05/2025 15:21

I think it wholly depends what you study and the CUG isn’t made up. For Engineering, DH was founder of an engineering consultancy. He felt it’s important grads are able to think for themselves and are not spoon fed. They need more than any lectures delivered in whatever way. It’s utterly ridiculous to say Bristol snd Sheffield are not good enough for engineering because they are RG. The quality of grad is still there.

The CUG is also entry grades and student outcomes. Therefore taking a degree with the best employment outcomes if doing humanities, also matters. If you are not falling far from the tree and not ambitious, it might not matter but we have a huge over supply of grads and being with ambitious people matters in terms of career.

I’m always surprised how low Keele now is when compared to Surrey, Lancaster, Warwick and Loughborough - all new in the 60s. So why go to the lower ranking university if you could get to one of these? Because it has a nicer site? Seems a shallow judgement to me. If your A levels are lower, sound judgement.

Many years ago, I went to Keele. It's a large out of town campus with bus links into town. Obviously, the choice of degree matters but as a university and campus, it's very good.

Pieceofpurplesky · 30/05/2025 20:51

@TizerorFizzDS got straight As at A Level and had offers at various places. He is not, however, hung up on prestige and went to the university where he was most inspired by the lectures he attended on open day. Which was Keele. He’s not regretted his choices and is off to a RG to do a masters for the same reason.

Phonicfail · 30/05/2025 22:27

DC’s offer grades at higher ranked universities were lower than Keele’s offer but it is the one for them so locked in now!

I guess it’s a win-win situation - If they don’t get in to Keele then they’ll hopefully get insurance uni which is higher by a long way up the league table.

They are really happy with their choice so fingers crossed it is the right one! I have always advised them to go with instinct - it’s there for a reason :)

Just joined this thread as my DD fancies a course (medical related but not medicine) they are one of few to do other than lots of places a very long away. Hadn’t thought about Keele despite an older family member going there! I visited once with work and all I saw was lots of very happy students in sunshine.
Great to read good reviews as she has ADHD/ASD & is very sporty and sociable but probably needs a supportive campus environment.. I’m now going to steer her to look.

Interesting thread.
DS is Y12, interested in biomed, definitely wants a campus uni. Keele is that sweet spot of being too far to commute, but close enough to get home in an evening if needs be.

These were my reasons for choosing Keele. I wanted a campus and it wasn’t too far from home but far enough I had to live in halls so I got to experience the best of uni life.

I absolutely loved it there. I took my DD for a visit last summer and she loved it and is now considering it herself.

@Stygimoloch that’s lovely to hear. We’ve booked an open day in June.

sausagesandwiches · 20/12/2025 11:27

Dd went

liked the uni side but had work placement as part of her degree and felt completely unsupported, communication was terrible and she was treated appallingly

several complaints later and she moved uni

eurotravel · 20/12/2025 18:49

Sweet spot for us too. About an hour away by car and longer by public transport.

Phonicfail · 22/12/2025 12:32

DC went to Keele in the end - will also be doing placements so fingers crossed these will turn out ok. They love it there - has been really lucky with both halls and support on their course. I would certainly recommend it based on their feedback so far which is a solid 8/10 :)
