Melville grove is a short walk to the uni going via Abercrombie’s Square.

Greenbank is out of the city. And students get a bus in.

My daughter wants to go to Liverpool but how come your sorting accom now when they haven’t sat their exams yet? Don’t remember doing this with my son!

GandTtwice · 12/05/2025 23:10

DD was in The Arch for her first year. It had a lovely big ensuite room (even on the lower band) and a great communal kitchen/dining/living room. She would have stayed for 2nd year if it wasn't first years only.
It's located near to the Anglican cathedral and Chinatown so close enough to shops and bars but DD didn't find it too noisy

Edit: just realised DD was John Moores university (not uni of) but I know quite a lot of the accommodation can be mixed so I'll leave the message just in case it's helpful for anyone else

Melville Grove is a good choice as it's on the edge of the campus near the Sydney Jones Library and Abercromby Square. Greenbank is a bus ride away, to the south of the city.
It's a pretty safe place for students, lots of people around at all times. If you choose Greenbank it's in a very nice area.
There are other student accommodation buildings that are for all three universities, it depends what you and your daughter prefer. In 2nd year she'll probably be house sharing in Wavertree- they all seem to do that!

Depends if they’d rather be city centre and walking distance or outside and don’t mind a commute. Also think about nights out and getting taxis back vs walking home. Greenbank is in a beautiful area and is only a short bus ride but might not get the city living experience and you need to be time disciplined to get in on time in the morning if you can’t just roll out of bed and into your lecture

My DD got her Lancaster accommodation offer yesterday and has until June 8th to accept or decline. Thankfully it's one of the two that she chose. Lancaster sent her details as soon as she firmed them about three weeks ago. I know that a lot of people on here say that Uni accommodation doesn't work on a first come first served basis (I know I know, every Uni is different etc.) but I'm glad that it's sorted and she can now just focus on exams. It makes sense to me that a Uni will want to get bookings sorted as soon as possible so they know how much accommodation is left for insurance/clearing students.

I think it's made it all real for her, she was quite emotional when she told me.

Have a look at Vine Court and Philarmonic Halls.

Pericombobulations · 13/05/2025 10:29

My son is in one of the student roost places in Liverpool as he missed getting a uni place and has stayed in there since he started a couple of years ago as he didn’t want to move out. We got details from the uni accommodation we were sent before he started.

Liverpool has loads of accommodation. If the uol owned halls fill up they have deals with the private companies so even if you end up woth private halls they will all be uol students if you go through uol accommodation portal.

Greenbank is lovely but it's a way out. Factor in the ubers home from a night out. The bus takes some getting used to because there are always settling in periods and at busy times busses are full and don't pick up from the stops in that case.

There's a FB group for uol parents.

My dd is at philharmonic and has had a great 1st year there.

ramonaquimby · 13/05/2025 10:47

Recently went to offer holders day, DC had already applied for Crown Place but they really liked Greenbank which we saw on the day. It's gorgeous with a fair amount of places to eat, pubs, cafes, etc nearby. It's a bus trip into uni/city centre but lots of unis have this sort of set up.

Frasmac · 13/05/2025 11:08

I went to UoL (nearly 20 years ago mind!!!) And I absolutely loved it. Great uni. I stayed in halls first year (Rankin in Carnatic Halls which has since been closed down) but Greenbank was there and considered "posh" at the time! The busses into town were frequent and it's a nice part of Liverpool. Close to Sefton Park and Allerton which has nice cafes etc. After first year a lot of students live(d) on roads off Smithdown Road with people met in halls. Getting home from town after a night out was never an issue.

myturntonamechange · 13/05/2025 11:36

DD20 is at Greenbank having originally gone for Philharmonic. Loves it - lots of green space, tennis courts, Sefton Park to run round and shops and pubs on her doorstep. She’s got into the swing of the buses now and uber back after a night out is pretty cheap. It gives a psychological as well as physical break from being so close to campus. Best thing is to visit a couple even if you can’t see actual rooms.

RampantIvy · 13/05/2025 16:41

I can third the recommendations for Philharmonic. Although the washing machines in the launderette aren't great.

crimsonlake · 13/05/2025 16:54

I know the Greenbank area well and it is lovely, basically just over the road from Penny lane.
You have Greenbank park on your doorstep, also a stroll up the road to Sefton park. You can get to trendy Lark Lane through this park.
Allerton road now with it's bustling wine bars and eateries is easily within walking distance.
Yes, it's a few miles out of town but a lively area with plenty to do. Buses might not be great in to town, but if there is a few of you you could hop a taxi back.

CharlotteLightandDark · 22/05/2025 20:09

My daughter has just put Liverpool as her reserve, have you put deposits down already? Seems risky as not sure how it’ll go!

Cynic17 · 22/05/2025 20:16

Greenback is fab, and the halls are newly rebuilt. I went there in my first year and liked it so much that I still only live a 10 minute walk away..... 40+ years later!

coxesorangepippin · 22/05/2025 20:57

Another one who lived in Greenbank for a while and loved it

Nice spot as it's near Penny Lane/Sefton Park

Rollofrockandsand · 22/05/2025 23:10

Philharmonic is fantastic and within walking distance of everything

RampantIvy · 22/05/2025 23:24

Yes it is.

Summerbay23 · 25/05/2025 07:36

DD is at Greenbank and loves it. Great rooms. Great gym. Loves being near the park (radio one big weekend at the moment). Bus to uni not a problem. Near Smithdown Road where lots live in year 2 anyway.
