Leeds University halls advice please

DS2 is hoping to go to Leeds to study Civil Engineering in September and is looking at the various halls on offer.
He’d like self-catered.
He likes the look of Henry Price, Central Village and Charles Morris.
Does anyone have any knowledge of any of these?
Tia

IIRC these are all close to the campus. Woodhouse and Headingly are popular with students for pubs etc so it’s worth looking further down the Otley Road too eg James Baillie.

My daughter has spent her 1st year at Montahue Burton. I've stayed there a few nights too and it's really nice. Great kitchens and bathroom facilities. Large social room with pool table and a small gym on site

My son also doing civil engineering Y1 and is in Montague Burton. 5 mins walk from Civil Engineering building and campus, around £6k for the year and modern with washing machines in kitchen. He’s been very happy there.

@Bickleymumma
That sounds good.
Is your DS enjoying his course overall?

The key thing is for your DS to be open to whatever he is allocated. IME it’s always rather a lottery. Leeds is a fantastic student city.

this is very true. BUT there is normally movement. My dd was in halls she really didn't want but before the end of the first term a space in Henry Morris came up. She knows several others with similar experiences.

Yes he seems happy with the course and his social life 😀

Unless they’ve added lifts then Henry Price is bloody hard work. I was in a 5th floor flat overlooking the cemetery. Charles Morris is a better option. Henry Price was cheap for a reason

Can I ask a really weird qn (as this might be DD’s favourite Uni). For the halls with TV’s and washing machines in “flats”, do they have “free” TV viewing and washing or do the collective group need to decide what to do?

Good luck to everybody on the A level slog.

daffodilandtulip · 13/05/2025 22:15

DD is in central village at the moment and absolutely loves it. Great location, clean and relatively big.

DD tv is in the shared kitchen lounge, viewing is free and they got a £90 washing voucher - don't know if all are the same.

We lived at Lupton 20 years ago. Location was fantastic - right in Headingley. Have heard from recent students that they also loved it there, despite none of us putting it down as a choice! A hidden gem.

HarrietSchulenberg · 16/05/2025 23:00

I was at Charles Morris a zillion years ago. All changed now - my building got demolished and rebuilt. The location was perfect and it was catered, which meant I got fed when I'd run out of money. It also meant I could get straight onto Red Route (which apparently featured in an episode of Blake's Seven) to get to my lecture halls and library without getting wet if it was rainy.
Sorry it's not up to date advice, but the location was great for town and lectures.

Pinkapron · 19/05/2025 14:02

DS was in Lupton 10 years ago, despite an unconditional offer, and not having chosen it. He loved it, and had a great social life, as well as studying hard.

CharlotteLightandDark · 23/05/2025 07:26

My daughter has put it as her first choice but we missed the open days and don’t know the city at all, is most of the accom central and near the campus? We’re going to have to go for the cheapest and she’ll have to lump it tbh!

TiredGardener · 23/05/2025 08:05

My daughter was in Leodis for her first year and really liked it. She had an en suite room and a shared kitchen / tv area. Close to campus. She really liked it! Got a £90 washing voucher too. That was 2022

Having recently stayed at Hinsley Hall, which is just past North Grange Road travelling away from campus, I would probably get the bus to and from Lupton, but then I'm over 60 and currently have a dodgy knee, which makes trudging up and down Leeds hills rather uncomfortable. DD, who is currently a postgraduate student living in Hyde Park, would probably walk most of the time. You can get student rate bus tickets, though.

DD didn't do her first degree at Leeds, although it was one of her five UCAS choices (she accurately predicted that she would be unlikely to get the A required in the one specified subject). On the open day, we looked at Charles Morris (the one overlooking St.George's Field, I think, with the Jak and Jill bathrooms), Henry Morris, Lyddon Hall and one of the blocks in the Central Village. Iirc, HM and Lyddon Hall were catered, which DD didn't want, but we had a nose around anyway.

I'm sure it wasn't there a couple of weeks ago, but they have now tabulated all the Uni of Leeds accommodation prices for 25/6. There is a lot of "commercial" accommodation being built around the town; some of that might be cheaper if there is an oversupply: https://accommodation.leeds.ac.uk/compare-residences/

I'm hoping to steer DD towards one of the "shared houses" - I lived in a couple in Bristol many many moons ago and it was really sociable as people were always coming and going into the kitchen/lounge.

Our recent experience is that you might specify halls you like but you list a price range and whether catered or not and en-suite or not and then you get something within your parameters.
My daughter specified Charles Morris and others on campus and ended up at Leodis, which we hadn’t considered. She came home yesterday having finished year one. Had a fantastic experience in Leodis, in a great flat of 6.
I would say make sure you state the price and facilities you want and enjoy what you’re offered. It probably won’t be the one you thought but will be a brilliant time.
