Hello wise people,

DS has not managed to find an internship for this summer. looking in area of finance, banking, it's very competitive and he started looking a bit too late considering the task.

I just wondered if anyone here had a word of wise dom or tips/tricks ?
we have told him to keep applying, but he says most applications are closed, they work on a rolling system anyway, so looking unlikely he will find something at this point.

Considering enrolling for CFA to try and develop his CV.

Any suggestions ?

He has a job that is portable (home/uni) and some flexible travel plans so the summer can fill up that way, but looking at possible ways to enhance his CV in his situation.

thank you

Does he know what job he ideally wants to do?
If he has applied for many internships, did he notice any gaps between his CV and the "desirable skills" often asked for?

Coding skills and advanced Excel/PowerBI etc can be brushed up on with free online courses.

Try and get some paid work. Ditch travel plans this year and see if any volunteering comes up as well. He doesn’t have another summer to get an internship so he’s got to use this one doing something productive. Anything in a charity re finance? CAB? Also ask around much smaller companies. DD got 2 weeks at a solicitor just by asking. Maybe there’s much smaller accountants who would help but he needs to get his backside into gear and not swan off abroad. Look at agencies for summer work.

Thank you
he has paid work that he can access but not in his career field.
‘I have told him to look at smaller compagnies and charities.
he isn’t sure of what he wants to do exactly, Excel is always a good idea. He has done some training on Bloomberg too and golfs a few certificates, he has just completed a week paid work experience in his field at least, but it is in a small outfit and summer internship isn’t an option

There are still openings being posted on the brightnetwork, ratemyplacement and the wiwikau website for summer placements.

As an example, this one was in an email from Beight today (I'd signed up at the start of the academic year to flag ones to my DS):

https://jobs.southwark.gov.uk/jobs/intern-local-economy-team-8-mth-ftc--sc07380

Might not be exactly what he wants to do, but looks like it could be interesting, and a salary of £28k pro rata is pretty good.

@OfftheygoIs “chosen field” the issue here? Most internships are fairly broad. I’d keep looking and be flexible.

He just needs to apply for everything. As you say it’s rolling, so there is stuff still available. My Dd applied for about 20, was offered 2. There is still time

Are any of the academics at his University using research assistants this summer? Also depending on how much stats/econometrics he has, do academics in other departments want someone to crunch numbers/data for them.

And look further afield. Government departments including those outside London, quangos, NHS, smaller research institutes, consultancies. Even places like estate agent chains and trade bodies do economic analysis.
