Best uni for politics and international relations, think my dc is going to exceed what’s needed for York or Nottingham

Mouseinthehouseeattingcheese · 29/04/2025 11:25

so entry requirements for York Nottingham Southampton
abb
following on from getting a good epq result

predicted grades have been aaa

bur course work and mocks been coming in at a stars
so I wouldn’t be suprised if this dc achieves 3 a stars

so what unis should we be looking at to upgrade to during clearing if this is a the case

dc not interested in Warwick or oxbridge

so would places like Edinburgh, Leeds etc have places in clearing or will they all be full already ?
what else is worth looking at through clearing ?
any other unis this dc should be looking at during clearing time ?

Those are good universities! I don't think you need to "upgrade".

cyclingmum67 · 29/04/2025 19:05

@MouseinthehouseeattingcheeseThe only reliable way to find out what courses a university offered in Clearing in previous years, is to submit a Freedom of Information request to them.

Relatively quick and straightforward to do via whatdotheyknow.co.uk

Entry grades doesn't tell you very much. If dc wants to get onto a grad scheme after uni, then Nottingham is the second or third most targeted university by big firms, so it's an excellent choice.

Where did you get this information from ?

Mareleine · 29/04/2025 11:43

Respectfully you're overthinking this. There's no universe where York, Southampton or Nottingham are not "good enough" for a top grade student with no interest in Oxbridge. A bird in hand is worth two in the bush, so I'd stick with your current offers (that your DC presumably chose after careful consideration) instead of binning them off in the hope of getting a "better" uni in clearing for the exact course he wants to do.

Edited

Completely agree. As an employer in a relevant field I wouldn’t distinguish between degrees from York, Nottingham or Southampton (where I graduated form!), and Edinburgh or Leeds. Employers have no clue what a university’s entry requirements are, and for early careers roles most candidates include their ‘A’ level results as well as degree subject/class.

dandelion1995 · 29/04/2025 19:16

Why is Leeds better than York for example? Seem to have the same entry grades and are neck and neck in the League tables for Politics. Did your DC look round York and Leeds- quite different vibes.

what modules are they interested in, do they want Campus or City, big or small city etc?

Seems mad to go through clearing and run the risk of no accommodation etc when he has good offers on the table.

DizzyDandilion · 29/04/2025 19:24

York is a lovely city. Get the ferry to the Isle of Wight from Southampton!
My ds is at Bath doing Politics and IR and loving it.

Bath does look like a nice uni, we didn’t get chance to visit there either

Where did you get this information from ?

This is most likely from High Fliers report thay show the most targeted unis by the top 100 employers.

How can I find out if Leeds
Edinburgh had clearing places in politics and IR last year ?

If you are in England (so RUK) fee status then there will likely be clearing places at Edinburgh.

But remember it's a four year degree so an extra year of living expenses.

How about Bristol? I did Politics there, it's a great city and course

lighttherapy · 29/04/2025 20:07

how about Durham or St Andrews?
St A has international course in collaboration with a US college

DemonsandMosquitoes · 29/04/2025 20:11

I’d one at Nottingham and have another now at York. Quite different uni’s but both great experiences. DS1 got on a grad scheme from Notts without too much difficulty interestingly!
York accomodation is expensive. Bear that in mind.

DoItLikeAWoman · 29/04/2025 23:49

@Mouseinthehouseeattingcheese- going off the point here but just hopped on to say my DD has just firmed Southampton for Pol & IR! We absolutely loved the uni and she has decided that even if she scores higher than the offer of ABB she’ll be going there.

fingers crossed it goes smoothly for both our DC

Oh I didn’t know that, that’s really useful info as that pretty much rules that out, plus it’s so far

https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/higher_education/5324329-uni-of-york-no-idea-what-accommodation-we-should-be-aiming-for-any-ideas

Some mention of the cost of private accommodation in York on that thread.

With respect, I do hope that you're not encouraging your DC to think of himself as 'too good' for the universitiesfrom which he holds offers, even if he does actually achieve the three A* that you think he might get.

DD's first degree was IR with French at Birmingham. Standard offer AAB. She had an unconditional offer on the strength of her AAA prediction, but due to certain distractions (rather ironically, mainly her role with our local Youth Council), she got BBB.

Then graduated with a First, and the departmental prize for the best dissertation in the year. There were probably students on her course with 3A* predictions, possibly some who had even met their predictions on the day. Some of whom would possibly have considered themselves to be superior to DD, had the subject of A level grades ever been a thing.

Uni of York, no idea what accommodation we should be aiming for ? Any ideas ? | Mumsnet

clary · 30/04/2025 06:37

@Mouseinthehouseeattingcheese if expensive is an issue be aware that typical shared house accommodation in Bristol (uni was mentioned by a pp) is about £200 pw or more, typically for 52 weeks (this is after a first year hopefully in halls) so £10k for the year. It’s known as very £££

Cabbagefamily · 30/04/2025 06:50

Loads of students will have three A-stars at York and Nottingham. My nephew had three A-stars and went to Sheffield Hallam, for example.

mumonthehill · 30/04/2025 07:18

Very similar to the post above DS had 3 A* at ALevel turned down Bath and chose Nottingham Trent, it was exactly the course he wanted and he had a great time there and completed his masters. It is not just about the uni rankings it is also about where will suit them best, course and for many affordability.
