Uni suggestions - Joint Honours Business & German

Scottishvisa · 13/04/2025 13:44

After any suggestions please.
DD is already looking at Manchester and Leeds.

Doesn't want to go to a Uni populated by private school, although she goes to one herself!

Thanks so much.

It mIght be too left field for your DD and she'll forfeit access to UK Student Finance, but Trinity College Dublin. Very grown up living, pluses and minuses but for independent YP it's a great option. And you get to leave most of the private school gang behind as it's not normally on UK students' radar, A levels will need to translate to CAO points. Fees for UK same as Irish students.

Have a look at International business with a language at Lancaster. Its a bit unique - 2 years studying in Lancaster then 2 years at their partner uni / business school abroad, studying in the foreign language - German is an option.
Then you get 2 degrees - 1 from each.

A relative is in their first year on the Spanish option and really enjoying it.

Sheffield, Edinburgh, Southampton, Newcastle

Scottishvisa · 13/04/2025 14:09

Thanks, really helpful. She wants to be near'ish to London.

Lancaster sounds interesting. Thank you.

Reading. I know someone who did this degree there. It’s close to London!

I get the feeling that Manchester is full of privately educated Londoners. That was just my impression from the open day.

xmasdealhunter · 13/04/2025 14:16

Queen Mary's Belfast is also worth a look- flight back to London is very easy (and often cheaper than a train ticket would be to get back from somewhere like Newcastle!), there's also the option of the ferry. They offer quite a few scholarships/perks for students.

Scottishvisa · 13/04/2025 14:19

Thanks for the information re Manchester!
She's more thinking of the likes of Exeter, Durham, St.Andrews etc.

My DD is at Manchester and although full of Londoners, they are not all private school. However, the suggestion of Newcastle is full of private schoollies.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 13/04/2025 14:31

She could just pick the cheapest accommodation offered. Thus making friends with non private school undergrads.
dd went to Warwick and the private school kids tended to be in the expensive halls whereas she was in the cheapest.

None of these are close to London, and they are the universities that attract the most privately educated students

Bath and Warwick are less than 2hrs from London by train and are known for the quality of their business courses.

I meant those are the Unis she doesn't want to go to.

Ah @Scottishvisa I was about to post to suggest that that was your intended meaning!

I am surprised that no one has mentioned Birmingham - big high-ranking uni, nice campus, massive big city offer, easy to get to London (or most places).

Or Nottingham – again nice campus, big city, central location. Bit more out of the centre than Brum tho. Does she have a pref for campus versus city-centre?

Both of those unis offer German or MFL with business.

Scottishvisa · 13/04/2025 16:13

I'll check out Nottingham and Birmingham too.

Definitely a city girl.

So probs not Warwick then. Has she looked at Bristol? Not a campus, uni is spread across an area of a big city. Was a bit posh when I was there but that was in the Dark Ages and it has moved on since then. Quick to London.

Also second a PP's suggestion of Bath tho that is a much smaller city than some of those mentioned.

Zippidydoodah · 13/04/2025 16:40

Not interested in Reading, then.

This just made me laugh. I apologise. But those unis are the most well known for their privileged intakes!

Piggywaspushed · 13/04/2025 16:49

Ah, just read your update.

I mean, all unis have a privileged intake and at some unis they can dominate vocally and tribalism is A Thing. A girl I taught now at Bath feels out of place there and DS was treated a bit like an amusing pauper at Birmingham... but I think that might be because he chose a catered option.

I did. See my next post.

I have been thinking, though... your DD is unlikely to experience those left out feelings my ex pupil and my DS did. She won't be rejected, or teased and will be identified quite quickly by accent and by answers to encoded questions so she'll be fine either way! I just hope she doesn't end up Common Peopling , to coin a phrase.

I agree with others that Bath is good for business + MFL courses.

I believe the opposite is true at some unis.

Piggywaspushed · 13/04/2025 17:08

Leeds is very popular with wealthy students. Ever since it got a Harvey Nicks! But it's a big city so also quite earthy.

She's currently at a pretty prestigious Boarding School & wants to escape the bubble where people blow £1k on Balenciaga trainers and wear them once.

Don't get me wrong though she rides, skis, sails etc etc!!

DD just wants real life. So I hope I have taught her well.
