My DS applies for University in September. He is looking at a combination of Spanish with Politics or IR. He isn't keen on London. At the moment he is considering Exeter, Durham, Edinburgh, Leeds, Newcastle & Manchester. Any others that are worth considering or anyone have their DC already doing a similar course? any advice or recommendations are appreciated. Thanks

@HPFA My DS saw Aberystwyth for Politics and IR at a uni fair he went to at school and was impressed with the course but was worried it would be a bit remote with not much to do. We're going to North Wales on holiday so we're booking a campus tour on the way. He wants to go to London. He's never lived there ( I was born there) but I wonder whether he's romanticising it and the traffic/busyness/expense will get really old really quickly.

Can't get away from it being remote but it does have all the usual facilities for nights out and sports etc. DD has made a lot of friends and seems to be out a lot, as well as taking up climbing.

Bear in mind it does have degrees in art, creative writing, film production etc so if you want a "hippy", creative vibe then it's there.

I personally like the atmosphere of the town, its strange to be in a place which seems down-to-earth and has that slightly shabby seaside feel but also feels quite vibrant and not run down. There's a couple of boarded up hotels but very few boarded up shops.

However if your DS has his heart set on London then it's possibly going to be hard to upsell a smallish seaside town!

I did say to DD when she was looking at unis that if she wanted to go to London she was really going to have to persuade me that she couldn't do the course anywhere else, or that it was significantly better than cheaper options. In the event I don't think she was very interested in going there, we don't live too far from London and she's been to the odd gig at the O2 but that's about it.

LOL yes probably! He does like the course though, and he is quite arty! We will look at other cities too. I will show him the accommodation prices and what he is likely to get in maintenance loan. I suppose at least there will be lots of opportunities for him to do part time work! Also interesting they offer Spanish as he's a semi fluent Spanish speaker (inexplicably as both his father and I are useless at languages) and wanted to continue it.
