Politics and International Uni choices

Daughter wanted originally to do politics and economics or PPE but doesn’t have maths grades needed at GCSE, meaning she has to opt for politics / politics and international instead.

She will be taking a year out so redoing gcse maths is an option she is considering in order to reapply.

In the interim she has had acceptance from Bristol, Bath, Leeds and Exeter for politics / politics and international.

Does anyone have any guidance about which might be a good choice (outside of city, location etc which will all come into play but are more personal choices)?

TIA

My DD is in Y1 of this course at Bath, her list was Bristol, Bath, Exeter, Cambridge and Bath Spa. It came down to Bath and Exeter, which both wanted the same grades and overall Bath just felt like a better city and university for her. Almost at the end of Y1 and zero regrets about her choice.

That’s really helpful thank you @GuestWWshe loved Bath when she visited, and it seems like a really nice place to study.

Also, Politics and IR

My eldest wanted to do Economics Politics and IR to keep flexibility and keep her options open

A few unis do offer this without a tougher maths requirements, though I think they do want GCSE 6 or better. I suspect if maths is a weakness you will find probably not want to go too much into Economics

FWIW she missed her Bath offer by 1 grade and ended up at Lancaster - have to be frank that the Lancaster Politics department there has been pretty poor (as an academic myself I have been appalled by some of the stuff I have seen)

Beyond those mentioned, she also looked at Warwick, Durham, St Andrews and Edinburgh

DD just about to graduate from Bath for the same subject, just one last essay to hand in and then she is done. She has loved her time there and now has a brilliant grad job to go to. As a parent I have been happy to have her there, lovely place, campus Uni, seemed pretty safe. Only downside is it is £££ and I have a DS in Bristol so the Uni years are keeping me broke!

A friends DS did that course at Bristol and he’s more than happy with his job in London. I think there’s a strong work ethic at Bristol and lots of people honing their skills by internships and student societies. Lots looking to work in London and I think being around motivated grads is a good thing. I’d add in a MFL too if she can and think about employment very early.

Would suggest she looks at modules very carefully. When I was looking at IR courses with DD it felt like you were looking at completely different subjects at times

Maybe write a list for each uni of the ones that really appeal - she might find one uni has a longer list than the others.

My DD did Politics, International Relations and Economics at Royal Holloway University of London.

She had Maths A-level, but they also had an Economics stream for non-Maths people.
