Does RSB accreditation really matter for Biomedicine?

Been looking at Clearing options for my daughter (in case results day doesn't go well). She is interested in a career in Biomed research / Biomedical Sciences (so thinking about doing a Masters to specialise after BSc, but things change)

She doesn't want to go down the IBMS / NHS route - one potential course I have found for her does not have RBS Accreditation

Wondering what a lack of RBS Accreditation actually matters in the real world, especially around employability?

Your first paragraph is exactly what my DD2 did.

As it happens, her course was IBMS accredited but she realised during her placement year that she didn't want to go down the NHS route either. So the answer to your question is, if your DD is certain that she doesn't want to work for the NHS then the accreditation does not matter at all.

In any case, its not an irreversible decision. If your DD changes her mind along the way, it's a matter of doing some extra courses Post-BSC to complete her accreditation.

thanks thing47, but its the RBS not IBMS accreditation I am trying to clarify.

Non IBMS courses seem to have RBS (Royal Biological Society) Accreditation except a small number and my daughter likes one of them - not sure if that should be a concern

Back in the day, when I did Engineering, a lack of accreditation to the appropriate Engineering body was potentially career limiting

I guess it might depend on what your DD wants to do after. As I said my DD did a research Masters - as far as I am aware neither potential PhD supervisors nor potential employers have since asked her about any firm of accreditation.

Being a biologist isn’t in itself a regulated profession, so I don’t think RBS accreditation is essential. However if it is virtually the only one that isn’t accredited you might want to do some digging as to why.
