My son is going to UWE next year and I was hoping for feedback on where he should apply to live in the first year. On campus too quiet? Love to hear feedback from families with students there. He's not a party animal, but don't want him to be isolated either.

I've studied at UWE recently as a mature student and it's a great Uni with a vibrant social scene. If your DS applies for on campus accommodation he won't be going far wrong. Could you and he visit UWE as that's a good way of getting an impression of the campus and students - it certainly wasn't quiet when I was studying there, but it's the sort of thing you'd find out by visiting and talking to the staff.

He's doing a great degree by the way, the Uni is a stone's throw from the Defence site where I work, so if he wants to get into an Engineering apprenticeship later, he won't have far to go!

Thank you daisychain01. Great to have positive feedback. Yes we did visit but it was first thing on a Monday morning so fairly quiet, but the students we did speak to seemed very friendly. He didn't get into his first and second choice, but the course looks great and as you say great links for apprenticeships close by.

Why would he be looking for an apprenticeship if he has a degree?

Work experience, I'm not an expert on all our schemes at work but there are different levels, like Degree apprenticeships, UG schemes, those joining after A Levels with opportunities to take degree during the scheme, lots of options.

For Aerospace engineering they have an option of a work placement for a year which is great work experience, so fantastic if you have companies that offer that close by. I had heard UWE particularly good for that which helps get the first job post degree.. Thanks again for your feedback daisychain01!

DS1 is doing an aerospace degree apprenticeship and studies 1 day a week at UWE. He lives about 10 minutes walk from UWE and about 25 mins from his employer. He has lived in the same house for the 4 years and shares with other degree apprentices. There is plenty of rented accommodation around and loads of it is suitable for students - 1 person in his house moved out and they advertised on Spare Room and got over 70 applicants! It’s a great place to live, work and study.
