Uni suggestions - Joint Maths and Comp Sc Degree

Hello,
DS would like to apply to University for a Joint Maths and Computer Science degree. Most probably an Msc. He's looking for a course with more Applied Maths modules. Is currently studying Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Computer Science. Predicted A,A, A* A.

He is not fussed about it being campus or city university. Preference is somewhere where both the maths and CS departments are strong and uni has good job prospects after he graduates.

I know that the league tables are not the only deciding factor, but looking at the individual subject rankings for Maths and CS for universities in Complete University guide league tables it is rather difficult to gauge the best university when it comes to a joint course as in some universities the computer science department ranks much higher than the Maths department and vice versa.

Would love to hear University suggestions for a Maths and CS joint course ( with more applied maths modules)?

PS - @Coldilocks and others

DS (and other potential applicants) can join the online forum The Student Room to get more information from students on the degree programmes he is interested in.

Thanks - he’s already a member and wants to firm up Bath which is why I am interested in why Birmingham seems the better choice.

My son went to Glasgow as it was the only one (in Scotland anyway) that offered the joint degree as an integrated Masters as opposed to the BSc (Hons). Admittedly he hates it and is going elsewhere this year.

What does he hate about it?

Bath is also a great choice, @Coldilocks !

The CUG ranks it No 8 in CS, so barely behind B’ham. Its relative weakness, but I hardly like to use the term, is CS research quality. (The fascinating thing about B’ham is that in a uni where research quality is generally very good, CS absolutely shines). The CS research quality at Bath is very good or excellent but nothing like B’ham or the COWI Schools of CS.

Excellent PhD students should seek to work with the strongest researchers they can, but for UGs this really isn’t an issue. It’s good to be embedded in a research environment and have the option of doing a UG project, but in fields like Maths and CS this is never going to be cutting edge - and no one expects it to be.

DS should by all means consider B’ham, but Bath is truly a wonderful option also. I would be delighted for my own YP to attend this programme at either institution. Mainly I would want them to feel in charge of the decision, to go off in the best frame of mind. Full engagement with the opportunities presented to them will be the biggest determinant of their success.

Best wishes to DS

What does he hate about it?

The timetabling
the lecturers
the people

its just not his place, tbh I didn’t think it would be as I went to Glasgow and thought it was shit as well, but he had to make his own decision.

My child is thinking of going to Glasgow. Can you elaborate more on the teaching and the people? I'm a bit worried. Where has your son decided to go instead?

Mine too, @ThatsNotMyTeen . I'd be interested to hear.

For OP, I would let your son choose the one he is drawn to. From a parent's perspective, he's not going to go wrong with Bath unless the slight difference in research quality is going to change his future job prospects.

It isn’t!

Sorry, my meagre advice was for @Coldilocks, not OP.
