Accommodation Newcastle and auto Nottingham

ChachiArcola · 22/02/2025 10:28

Ive just started to look at accommodation and I'm a bit panicked tbh.
DD only just got an offer from Newcastle, and it looks like they have an early booking process which has now closed?!!
Don't have a offer from UoN yet, and looks like some accommodation already fully booked anyway.
Can someone please reassure me about accommodation or are we going to be left with pot luck/whatever is left?
It's really putting me of both.

I've employed Dr Google for you; it's all very clearly laid out here including the fact that new batches of rooms are released regularly right up to June.

https://www.ncl.ac.uk/accommodation/living-with-us/policy/allocation-policies/

Accommodation in Newcastle for students is cheap and plentiful for subsequent years too - a look at Rightmove for the Jesmond area, which is their preferred enclave, will show you the amount still available for September.

ChachiArcola · 22/02/2025 11:48

Thank you. Releasing in batches implies some already reserved? so the number available already reduced and the longer you leave it, the less of a chance to book preferred? Apologies if I not grasping this.
Good that plenty of accommodation after yr 1.

This must be a recent thing. Newcsatle didn't used to allocate accommodation until after the exam results.

What halls is your DD looking at for Newcastle?

ChachiArcola · 22/02/2025 20:33

I probably been bit naive as just thought equal consideration only just passed etc so no rush.
It seems that if you had firmed Newcastle then you could apply for accommodation preference/and guaranteed under their under grad scheme. It's possible I've misinterpreted this.
Only just started looking at accommodation, offer holder day in March which we plan to attend.
Been looking at Marris house, Windsor Terrace and Park View.
Any info on accommodation would be appreciated, thanks.

Uni off Notts accommodation not open yet as far as we can see. Says April 1st. But if anyone knows differently let me know!

RampantIvy · 22/02/2025 20:53

@ChachiArcola DD was in Park View and liked it there. Park View was really convenient for the medical school.

Splattsagain · 23/02/2025 09:38

DS is at Newcastle and stayed in Park View for first year, it's very nice - modern, plenty of facilities (the uni gym is based there for example), and walking distance to the centre.

Thanks for the info. When I look at Rutland and Sherwood halls, it say fully booked!? It's so confusing if it's not open until 1st April.

Thank you. DD will be at the Business School. Going to an offer holder day in March, not been before as didn't attend an open day so all bit unknown other than heard great things as a uni city.

Thanks v much. On site gym sounds good, she does play in a sports team so that would be handy.

@ChachiArcola One of DD's friends in halls was at the business school.

Newcastle is really compact and walkable and is an excellent shopping centre. Tynemouth is a short metro ride away and has often been described as one of the most desirable seaside towns to live in. It is nothing like Blackpool. The weekend market in Tynemouth station is brilliant.

There is loads to do in Newcastle. Also, although it has a party reputation partying is entirely optional.

KingscoteStaff · 23/02/2025 10:00

DD was in Park View and loved it. She is a medic, so super close to lectures, but also very convenient for the gym/sports centre.

I thought it was odd not to have a bar/common room attached to the halls (having been to a collegiate uni myself) but DD quickly bonded with flatmates, joined societies and teams and her social life took off.

Splattsagain · 23/02/2025 10:11

Also DS loves Newcastle - the nightlife, the proximity to the beach (I second Tynemouth as well, great market and nice area), the amount of green areas close to the centre (Jesmond Dene is right near his current flat), great shopping etc.

We actually live close to Nottingham so he has very up to date comparisons of the two - the nightlife is very good for both of them (Nottingham has Rock City for example), but overall he prefers Newcastle. Although the ice rink is a LOT better in Nottingham (bit niche, but he's a skater).

DD never went in to the student union. There is so much on the doorstep in Newcastle I don't think the SU gets many students in it.

Many thanks for your replies. Feeling more positive about it all today. Newcastle was a bit of a last minute swap so I don't feel as prepared. Looking forward to the offer holder day, suspect DD will really like it. Thanks again 😊

Agree with comments on Newcastle above. DD in second year. Was in Park View first year. Was clean and safe. House sharing second year. Such a compact city but with a lot going on. She loves it and hope your DD does too.

Thanks for posting, we both really looking forward to the offer holder day and I feeling much more positive about the accommodation now. Clean and safe sounds good to me.

The offer holder day confirmed that DD really did make the right choice about Newcastle. It is definitely worth attending.
