New Graduate Vet jobs

ipredictariot5 · 21/02/2025 16:17

Hope some vets see this and can help me! My DD is trying to find a job. The jobs market seems very competitive and I am not sure why!
is it the requirements of the graduate portfolio that put practices off hiring? The corporates are all telling her they have tons of applicants and few jobs. She has also been told today she is competing against vets who graduated in previous years and did not have a good experience so are applying to new grad schemes too?
it has a feel of the problems young doctors are having getting jobs too
any tips or advice would be appreciated.

@ipredictariot5 can relate. Been told that it's because the corporates are waiting for the monopoly commission report. So don't want to invest. Apparently still massive shortage of vets and practices are very over worked but no investment. It's rubbish for them.

Been told it should get better once report published. But have no clue when that might be. This was not a problem they thought they'd face ! Covid to start and lack of jobs on leaving.

There is a shortage of vets. We all want to recruit experienced vets but there aren’t any. Has she considered working for an independent? Will she do out of hours? I think she should be able to take her pick. The corporates promise a lot but people do seem to have bad experiences with them. Independents are more personal.

mumsneedwine · 21/02/2025 18:07

@VoyagerOfTheTeenYears can you recommend any good places to look for independent ? Looking at vet record but not many even on there. Thank you

VoyagerOfTheTeenYears · 21/02/2025 18:09

I will PM both of you

mumsneedwine · 21/02/2025 18:10

Thank you so much 🥰

Your poor DC stuck in jobs crisis in medicine and vet - it wasn’t supposed to be like this! Great advice @VoyagerOfTheTeenYears thank you for taking the time to respond

@mumsneedwine having learnt so much from your posts about applying for med school (daughter #1) I was interested in this thread as daughter #2 has expressed an interesting in being a vet, and didn't expect to see you on this too! Are you also a mine of info for aspiring vets? Are there any good threads you recommend reading? Am I right in thinking that there is no UCAT test for vets, but work experience questionnaires? I nearly pranged the car when daughter #2 said she was interested in becoming a vet! Still early days for her yet, but I like to be prepared in case her interest is serious.

mumsneedwine · 23/02/2025 20:54

@SuperSue77 😂I get everywhere. Yes I do know a stupid amount about vet applications - I can send you my 'handbook' if you DM me your email. My DD has loved her course. Jobs are bit scarce at moment but we've had some great advice from the lovely person on here.

No UCAT but do need work experience. Each Uni looks at different amounts but it's good to have a variety - more so you know what you're getting into. Every Uni has different forms you need to complete before interview - Bristol don't interview and very totally on their form.

Let me know if fancy a chat

SuperSue77 · 23/02/2025 21:01

@mumsneedwine thanks! Do you hel the aspiring vets at your school as well as the medical applicants? I will DM you my e-mail address as soon as privaye messaging is available again - it is currently saying "private messaing has been disabled"! Not sue if it;s just me or for everyone - maybe Sunday IT system work.

mumsneedwine · 23/02/2025 21:11

@SuperSue77 yes. Started helping the vets about 8 years ago, again because I watched my own DD navigate the process. Less strategy needed in applying, but lots more wex ! But you don't need lambing etc. couple of weeks at vets, couple helping at stables or kennels and even a paid job counts too !

But boy do you need to want to do it ! It's a tough course with placements all year, so hard to have a paid job. EMS weeks a bit less now but still a lot.

Would agree with this. It is a tough tough course virtually no holidays and if you miss a day on placements they add it onto end. But the new students have a drop in EMS from 38 to 30 weeks I think which will be a big help to them

re missing a day on placements - this is placement specific. One of my kids is in Year 2, they have missed days here and there, was still signed off from all placements completed to date

mumsneedwine · 10/03/2025 06:36

There's a limit to how many days they can miss. If they go over they have to resit that placement to pass the year.

ramonaquimby · 10/03/2025 14:50

My understanding is as long as they complete their 12 weeks before end of 3rd year it's fine. Why would they have to repeat a year? Students manage their own EMS. Maybe that's just for my child's university. Small sample size!

mumsneedwine · 10/03/2025 15:01

@ramonaquimby not repeat a year, just that placement. More important in clinical years when it's blocks not EMS.

They do have to complete the full number of weeks designated by the RCVS so as long as have the right number of days by end of year 2 they'll be fine. Otherwise they just have to make those hours up before entering year 3.
