My DS is considering to apply for a degree in this discipline. Can anybody recommend universities, any tips and advice? Thanks

@Ceramiq I don’t think many history undergrads rock up at university wanting to be professional historians. Of course their skills are useful. However politics undergrads seem to think this degree leads to a job in politics. What it’s really about is skill acquisition. They join a long list of undergrads wanting the same jobs.

@TizerorFizz Not historians but they want to enter verbally analytical professions (law, politics, management consultancy etc) and work hard at entering those careers.

@Ceramiq Yes I do know that. However politics is seen by many as being directly vocational into the world of politics. It’s an employable degree though if dc work at their cv.

@TizerorFizz
When you say CS was a no for the person you know with a policy background. Do you mean they discounted CS as a career as they didn't think it good enough or was it a no as they didn't want to give up political campaigning (or was it because CD didn't want him/her). Asking for my DD who holds an offer but is slithering.

Apologies for the derail.

CS and swithering- sorry multitasking

@PearlStork The person I know did a “double masters” at Maastricht and could not get into the Civil Service. Well not at the level
he wanted I guess. I think there’s massive competition and, maybe, with academics and no work experience, it’s difficult. DD1 has a friend who studied history but then went abroad to work and learn a new MFL for 2 years. An unusual MFL. Then went into civil service and has done very well. I’m just not sure how realistic it is to get some jobs without a bit extra and DDs friend is very bright. The DS we know is very pleasant but not someone who really pushes themselves to stand out. Had a great time in Maastricht though.

@TizerorFizz thank you. My DDs CS offer is just the basic graduate scheme. My DD did summer work experience in a government department where virtually everyone had a PhD/vast previous experience. If nothing else, she realised how unlikely getting a job with them immediately post graduation would be.

TizerorFizz · 07/02/2025 14:30

@PearlStork Yes. I think it’s very challenging. Plus lots have these qualifications but if you can get relevant experience I do believe it’s a help. It’s great to get a job though!
