University Applications 2025 - Timeline and Deadlines

FiveFoxes · 24/01/2025 11:43

I am trying to draw up a timeline of what DS needs to do and by when for entry in 2025. So far I have got:

+29/01/25 - UCAS applications close
+Feb-Mar - Applications to Student Finance Opens (I can't find the actual date yet!)
+April-May - University accommodation applications open (not sure if these are only for firm choice or insurance too. I think it might depend on the Uni)
+14/05/25 - Universities must have made decisions on applications
+End of May? - Deadline to apply for Student Finance
+04/06/25 - Deadline to accept university offers on UCAS
+May-June - Investigate and apply for Student Bank Account

  • End June - University accommodation applications close (depending on Uni) +14/08/25 - A- Level results day. Accept offers, confirm accommodation and confirm to student finance
  • Sept/Oct - Start Uni.

Have I missed anything? Any dates I don't know?

Those are deadlines. What about open days? Research is really, really important.

LikeABat · 24/01/2025 13:52

School will have an internal deadline for providing the reference.
Probably too late for open days but try to attend offer holder days.
Accommodation deadlines differ according to university. Just make sure you know what they are for the firm choice. Can be first come first served and if missed may not get anything at all or only after clearing students.
In the lead to results day up it's worth getting a short list of available places as they can go very quickly in Clearing. Hopefully not needed but better to be prepared.

Sorry, I should have said he's already applied, and has offers. He's just waiting for one Uni, hence the application deadline on there as hoping they'll respond soon after that...

He's booked onto Offer Holder days - hoping he'll get information about University specific deadlines at those, such as accommodation.

Does it matter when you accept a Uni offer, so long as it's before June? I assume it might if accommodation is first come first served. But that seems very unfair if you're waiting for offer holder days and even offer(s) !

I'd probably add "look at courses in clearing" a day or 2 before results day just in case results day doesn't go to plan so you have option B if needed.

SelfishChild · 24/01/2025 14:43

Clearing opens 5th July 2025

FiveFoxes · 24/01/2025 16:08

Thank you! I'd forgotten about Clearing! Wishful thinking?!

Different universities do accommodation differently - some do first come first served, others do it by date of confirmed place (results day for many, could be earlier if you have unconditional or results already in have). There are probably other variations. So worth checking out so he knows whether he needs to confirm offer acceptance early.

Some universities take a long time with their offers - Durham used to be notorious.

DiddlyDiddly · 24/01/2025 18:16

So my son has accepted an unconditional offer. He can't apply for accommodation until the applications open in a few weeks. Even then they put the requests into a kind of lottery and pick them out when the results have come through for everyone, so it's considered equitable. I WISH there was an advantage in terms of him getting preferences for rooms, but there isn't.

AelinAG · 24/01/2025 18:21

He doesn’t need to accept his offer on results day. If he’s met his firm hes automatically in. If he’s missed his firm but met insurance he’s automatically in. He doesn’t need to confirm student finance but if he’s not going to his firm choice, he just needs to update that.

schedule in some time to think about clearing the Monday of results week.

AelinAG · 24/01/2025 18:24

other things to make a note of timing wise - when can he collect his results from school?
will he need DSA or extra support at uni?

Thank you! I was assuming you had to respond somehow!

Clearing is definitely going on there!

Clearing opens in July, but for those waiting for A Level results, it really becomes useful in the week before results are released and particularly the day before and evening before, as then you can see what really is available and at what grades.

Yes, to finding out when school or college release results. UCAS tells you if you’ve got into firm or insurance or clearing but not grades. It’s not possible to navigate Clearing for better unis or if disappointed, without those grades. Best places go by9.30 so you want your results at 8am.

Being available to do speedy visit to a Clearing option on the Friday (day after results) or around to deal with Clearing in early part of following week is good too.

You can’t usually apply for a student bank account until you have your results and a code showing that from UCAS.

Different unis allow different categories of student to apply for accommodation or Colleges in the case of a few. Some only allow those who’ve firmed, others firm and insurance, others any offer holder. Worth doing a spread sheet to show that info for each place…at least firm and insurance. Also worth noting if they allocate firstcome, first served (less do it now) or after results etc.

One other thing….for your firm choice, if you’re fairly confident of getting it, worth booking nearby Premier Inn on flexible rate (can be cancelled without charge) for the Sept/Oct day before term starts if you will have a long return journey that can’t be undertaken in a day. Accommodation fills up and gets more and more expensive. No need to do that right now, but maybe after firming.

Also worth looking at exam timetables to see when all the exams will be, especially if there might be any logistical issues of getting to them.

If your DC has exam Access Arrangements for special needs, check everything is in place now….don’t wait to find out that it’s too late to sort out.

Make sure you know what to do and who to contact at school or college if there are any issues in the lead up to exams or during, that might require special consideration. These might include a close family bereavement or illness of DC.

Make sure you are available on results day to collect results and find out grade boundaries and know how to apply for review of marking if a grade is narrowly missed. It has to go through school or college but doing it on results day is often easier than a few days later when staff might not be in. Priority remarks can come back very fast and mean a student gets their place, rather than being deferred to the following year.

Before results day, have chats with DC about worst case scenarios. Look at alternatives in Clearing. Have a plan. Be prepared to help them on results day if Clearing is needed, which is difficult if they are terribly disappointed.

All might sound bewildering and rather ‘boot and braces’ but pre-armed is pre-warned.

@WombatChocolate Thank you for taking the time to share all that brilliant advice. I really appreciate it!

Can anyone recommend resources for preparing for A level Results Day this week? For instance, if a re-sit is needed, what do we need to do?
Thanks!

Once you are in the system they will email reminders, the more important thing currently is to research and choose universities and course then get the internal deadlines for their current school for ucas - they have to write individual references so its essential to work with the school’s timetable, typically it’s in December
