Jesus College Oxford - kitchens?

Hiya

DC unexpectedly has an interview at Jesus College Oxford, but reading about it, it says there are no kitchens available to undergrads. I understand they want them to eat at Hall, but are there no gyps/tearooms/staircase kitchenettes even? Where do they make drinks?

Thank you

In their rooms

it’s annoying IMO

Thank you - so they're allowed kettles in their rooms? What about keeping milk etc, are they allowed a fridge?

Yes you can have a kettle, fridge, microwave (my knowledge may be not completely up to date!)

I recently stayed at Corpus and they had kettles in rooms and a sink at the bottom the staircase with a microwave next to it.

Corpus used to have small kitchens. Fridge, a hob or two and maybe a microwave for each staircase.
Then everyone had a kettle and probably a toaster/sandwich maker in their own room.

But really most people living in age at least one meal in the dining hall, and would have had sandwich or similar for the other meal.
Except Saturday night, when no dinner was provided and most people went to Carfax Chippy or Burger King.

Just asked D1, she says there are no kitchens, the rooms have fridges in them and you need to take your own kettle etc.

DC1 just finished at Jesus, Oxford. It was a pain in the first year. Not even allowed a toaster in your room. Just a kettle. No kitchens except on one staircase miles from son's room. DC1 is 6'5 and sporty and found hall food insufficient in quantity. I think he relied on Greggs & Kebabs to top up - not great but not the end of the world! They do thought have great college socials and a good college spirit so I wouldn't get too hung up on the food.

The plus side is the second and third years at Jesus are great as you are in student flats, DC1 loved being able to cook for himself and that was much better for him than being still in college as other 2nd and 3rd years are. His flat mates and girlfriend liked cooking as well so it was very social. You also get the flats for 40 weeks a year so don't have to empty them at the end of term. A mega bonus. And quite good value.

So Jesus has upsides too!!

@Juja, I don't suppose your DC can remember which staircase has the kitchen can they? Thank you

I'm sure you'll find it once you're there.

Sorry all I know is it was in one of the old quads and also there is a microwave in the JCR. If your DC gets an offer they will manage like generations of students before. Given you are allowed a kettle in your room they get creative with drinks, soups and instant noodles...

If your DC has a particular medical reason for needing access to a kitchen then the college may well place then near the one and only one!!

PouffeTheMagicDragon · 11/12/2024 21:38

Thank you @juja, yes that's exactly why I'm asking, we didn't realise at the time DC was picking a college that there were no kitchens so it's good to know there is one somewhere for medical need.

Just keeping everything crossed for an offer now! Thank you for your help.
