Project help.

Hi, I'm hoping you can help me with a project I'm doing for my design course. It might sound like a daft question, but when you cook do you use all the rings on the cooker? I tend to just use the front two all the time so the back two are really not needed. It would be great if you could help!

From a health and safety perspective it's better to use the back two so you don't tip hot oil on yourself.
I used 4 of 5 today, when cooking, as they're different size burners and I was using different sized pans.

ErrolTheDragon · 27/11/2024 01:01

Mostly just one or two- back if it's boiling something, front if I need to stir a sauce.
Yesterday all four - meatballs frying, tomato sauce, spaghetti and veg. Could have done it on 3 if I'd used a steamer over the spag for the veg I suppose, but two wouldn't have been enough.

I use the back two the most! One is much bigger (good for big frying pan). I have five and use them all on Christmas Day lol.

My hob is on an island and has 3 different sized heat zones. I tend to use the smallest ones most frequently (in my case front right and back right). I'm generally cooking for 1-2 people.

Firefly100 · 27/11/2024 08:23

They all get used but rarely all at the same time. Depending on the size of the pan I’ll need a different ring and only 2 are the same size (5rings). All get used at the same time for large events Xmas /Easter etc

AlisonDonut · 27/11/2024 08:28

I don't even have a cooker. I have a 2 ring hob. I'd have a smaller one ring one if I didn't have to cook rice and pasta seperately.

I use the one on the left mostly for sauces and the one on the right for rice and pasta, because my chopping board is on the left of the hob unit.

MeanderingGently · 27/11/2024 08:33

I never use all four rings at once, but I'm single and on my own so cooking tends to be a fairly simple affair.
The front rings on my top are smaller so I only use those when I have a small saucepan (eg. making quick scrambled eggs). The back rings are larger so better for longer boiling or meat browning so I'll use these instead. If I have a pan simmering for a longer time, I'll also use the back ring as it's safer, and better placed for the extractor fan.

Usually front 2

Geneticsbunny · 27/11/2024 08:34

We have 5 and I regularly use 3 and occasionally 4 but only use 5 at Christmas or when we have a lot of people over for dinner

GuestWW · 27/11/2024 10:10

Also have five, but cannot use them all at the same time. Usually use the front, left every time I cook, and quite often either front right or back left pan size dependent. The back right is mostly irrelevant unless a big cook is happening, but that is rare. We are almost all left-handed in our house, so no idea if that makes any difference.

Best of luck with the project.

I've an induction hob on an island with a large and small zone at the front and at the back. Most often the front large and back large are being used together which sit diagonal to each other. Sometimes it is tricky to fit 4 large pans on if needed. When I had a gas and electric hob against a wall, I'd use the back ones more often so boiling water or hot contents were furthest away. Especially when the children were young.

shellyleppard · 27/11/2024 19:02

Only have a small cooker with two rings. Can only use one if the oven is on so I use a streamer then

murasaki · 27/11/2024 19:04

I tend to use one from the front and one from the back, as there's a bigger hob diagonally on those so they fit bigger pans.

stichguru · 27/11/2024 19:09

On our cooker
Back 2 are medium size
Front left is big and front right small

So yes I use the back for bigger pans that need to cook slowly, because front right is too small and front left too fierce!!

Our hob has the same arrangement. The only time I would possibly use all four rings is at Christmas when both all five of us are here and I may be cooking more 'units', so to speak.

The ring I use most is the back right one. Sometimes it and the front left (pasta) or front right (rice - start off front left, move over once water brought to a boil) or sauces. I quite often do a whole meal as one traybake (or 'trayroast') in the oven, though, so none of the rings really get overworked in the normal course of events.

EwwSprouts · 28/11/2024 18:51

I use the large ring front left for pasta/rice/wok. Small ring back right for boiling veg/soup/beans etc. Never use all four as usually grill or oven meat/fish and use slow cooker a lot for sauce based dishes.

We have a cooktop and the burners work this way. Using all four at once is a bit crowded but if you think carefully about the sizes of the pans it can be done.

For the evening meal we usually have three going at once.
