Has anyone done Parent Power Birmingham with the Brilliant Hub

A lady came to my daughter's school to talk about the Parent Power program. I'd love to get involved as DD is very bright and has ambition to study medicine at uni.

I didn't go to uni. I have no clue about the process and I'm feeling more and more useless each time she asks me a question where I don't know the answer. It's actually getting me down.

The meetings are in the evening in the city centre though and I would have to leave work bang on to get to the meetings on time. The lady said there's no commitment in attending every meeting but I don't want to miss out. I can't make the first meeting so I'm just wondering if anyone has done it and what's it like? Is it even as good as they say it is in the first place?

Title is meant to ask about Parent Power in any location. Not just Birmingham!

is it free?

Mipil · 23/11/2024 13:39

I’ve never heard of it. Is it free?

If you head to the medicine threads on MN there are plenty of knowledgeable and helpful, experienced posters who can answer every question you have about applying to university and medicine. And what questions you need to ask them, if you don’t know what you don’t know 😂

Yes, it's free and the lady said food will be provided as it's in the evening. I didn't ask what kind of food though. I doubt it would be an actual meal.

So that would mean I'd have to drive out of work like a bat out of hell, try to find parking, go to the meeting, then rush back to sort dinner (if DD comes with me).

It's the logistics that is putting me off slightly. It sounds great otherwise but it would be good to hear som real life experiences.

Yes it's free.

Good shout about the medicine thread! I didn't think to actually look at the other threads in education- just plonked my question here. Thanks!

If it’s free, give it a go but don’t stress if it turns out to be too difficult! There are other ways to find everything out. MN, The Student Room and WIWIKAU, university open days… The school will probably have a parents’ evening about applying to university. Links to things like the medical schools council will be on MN medicine threads.

I am definitely stressing too much - overthinking as I don't want to miss out on a good opportunity! Thanks.

what’s the “opportunity “?

Mipil · 23/11/2024 14:46

An opportunity to be told everything OP and her DD need to know about applying to university so she doesn’t need to stress about whether there is something she doesn’t know she doesn’t know, @JustCallMeBusyLusy.

Don’t underestimate the advantage having been through the system yourself and knowing how it works gives your DC when it comes to applying.

surely a one off evening talk from the school?

What @Mipil said. I heard about it through DD's school but I believe it's not much to do with the school otherwise.

They have meetings throughout the year with talks from staff at universities who inform parents about student finance, UCAS, etc. Things I know little to nothing about. There's also a chance for parents to form working groups. Because of that, I'd really like to attend every meeting.

I think I'm going to join. If I miss some meetings, so be it. Some attendance will be more beneficial than not attending at all!
