How are unis dealing with this, are there robust procedures in place with detecting the use of AI ?

Depends what you mean. Generally AI is now considered as a useful tool when used appropriately and there is a lot of effort to ensure students are trained to use it in this way. There’s also been an emphasis on assessment design to prevent students simply being able to use AI to give an answer. If you are focusing solely on AI and misconduct- universities approach it in different ways- some will use software to detect AI (Unfortunately not ours) but it’s becoming increasingly obvious to spot when a student has used AI simply due to the language and superficial way it answers any in depth question. When spotted the approach is to treat like any type of contract cheating/ essay mills etc.

Thank you, I meant using it in when it’s not allowed

It's academic malpractice, same as plagiarism.
We are limiting use, which must always be declared including prompts, to some modules and some types.
We are also finding that there are lots of cases of undeclared use where it would be allowed if declared.

One of the roles I hold at my place is academic offence adjudicator. It's probably the most common offence we're seeing at the moment. Generally they get referred because the marker suspects use of AI. There's no foolproof way of identifying its use, there's a few red flags that might indicate its use but I'd be prepared to bet that many students use AI and never get detected.

We use vivas to evaluate those students suspected of using AI. Asking about the process they used to write the assignment, the research they did and the content is usually revealing

That would be academic misconduct.
It's treated in the same was as other types of academic misconduct.

Those were my thoughts, there is always a way to cheat the system which is so unfair for the ones who earn their education in an honest way

I see lots of people use AI at my work (a citizens advice bureau type place) and it is increasingly becoming very obvious to me when someone has used AI. In many instances also, it is fundamentally wrong! It writes flowery and superficially and if the user doesn’t really understand the topic, it can give the ‘wrong’ answer. I imagine it is getting easier for universities to pick up also.

I use AI after I've written to help ecaluate places when there are weaknesses/ill expressed ideas or the text doesn't flow. Once I identify those I then go and work on the weakness myself. I think of it like a conversation. Is that cheating? (I never use it for facts).
