Predicted grade changed after UCAS submission

DD has done early entry and following recent tests her teacher has said they now predict her an A* for Further Maths instead of A. However they say they can't amend her prediction as her UCAS application has already been submitted.

Her submitted A grade prediction for FM meets the minimum expected grade but I assume an A* would make her application stronger. She needs Astar Astar* *A for the highest entry requirement course and her current application does give her this for her other subjects.

Teacher has suggested emailing all the universities she has applied to advising them of predicted grade change but I'm not convinced this will even get seen by relevant people.

Any advice?

Many thanks

<Edited as having a nightmare with the *s! 🤣>

She needs aaa and that is recorded as predicted
Don't worry

Is she applying for math?

MrsAlwaysRight · 31/10/2024 10:59

Hi, OP -

Indeed once the application has been submitted the PGs cannot be changed, sadly.

However the top Economics programmes are fiercely competitive and I agree that an A star in FM could be significant for DD.

I presume the school will be doing the emailing, as admissions teams would not be very impressed with unsubstantiated claims from applicants that their PGs have improved.

As a former admissions tutor in a very large, competitive RG STEM School, I think the chances that an email from the school will reach the relevant admissions team are good. You could increase them by doing some detective work: root around to discover what the units of admission for DD’s degree programmes are. Eg Department of Economics, School of Social Sciences, Economics Admissions Tutor at X College Oxbridge, etc. I suspect that DD is looking at universities where the admissions is mostly based in a disciplinary unit or College, rather than a University Admissions Team. If you can provide the School with email addresses that is optimal. Even ugadmissions@econ.uni.ac.uk is fine. That will go to the unit admissions administrator who will route it properly and promptly (if my experience is typical, and I think it is).

If I am right, bypassing the UAT, which is swamped and which is where email is most likely to die, may speed things up a lot.

Good luck with this

PS Actually DD rather than you should do the detective work!

PPS Being pedantic I feel obliged to say I made up the last email address. I meant that the generic address for UG admissions to the unit handling Economics will be fine.

Not the case at all. Applying with predicted grades that match the typical grades is not a guarantee of an offer.

poetryandwine thank you, that's really useful. I'll get her to find the relevant email addresses and to ask her teacher after half term.

My DD's grades changed several times (got much worse) from January to May and each time we rang admissions and discussed what to do. Some of her choices said yes, still ok by us, some said no outright which left us knowing where we stood. I called them all myself, so as to get it sorted ASAP.

The emails should be sent by a senior member of staff - not just a teacher.
It does happen from time to time and the only way round it is for the college to email each university on the form.

Thanks for all the replies - much appreciated
