York, Warwick, UEA for Biological / Biomedical Sciences?

Like the title really, my DD has narrowed her choices to these three (from so many!). In case its relevant, after first degree they are thinking of a Masters as a gateway into microbiology / immunology research (but that could change massively).

Don't know that much about any of them beyond what we learnt at Open Days and read online. Each seems to have pros and cons, would welcome opinions.

My dd studied Biomed at Warwick (Life Sciences grad 2023)and has just completed her Health Research Masters at Warwick Medical School.

If your daughter is looking to go into research a Masters is generally the minimum level required to become a Research Assistant (based on the current job market). A lot of companies/universities tend to look for post doctoral candidates to take up research jobs at Associate level.

The competition for jobs is strong...my daughter is currently applying for positions at the moment. She did manage to work on a paid research project during her Masters to get some experience (she will be named on the publication) but it maybe that she will end up applying for a PHD if she does not secure a job. There are a wide range of openings from the NHS and the Civil Service plus Universities and Pharma companies....but like others have stated interest areas do narrow down to what areas interest you most.

She enjoyed her time at Warwick, UEA was her insurance and she looked at York, Bath and Bham.

just to update folks on things - after all the super useful comments and advice here

DD has got her offers in and likely will be firming York, insuring Warwick pending Offer Holder days

Not a reflection on the Unis more a fact that Warwick made a very generous offer and York made their standard offer so it makes sense to do them that way round

Fantastic to be sorted so early. Thanks for updating.

Can I jump on this oldish thread to see if @Drampa and others with experience have any thoughts on MSci Glasgow, York or Sheffield for biochemistry. (Also has an offer from Lancaster, but currently leaning away from that). Glasgow seems to have the strongest reputation but it scored weirdly lowly in one of the student survey questions that pops up at the bottom of the page - 54% of students were satisfied with overall course. The others have much higher scores. Personally I am slightly reluctant for her to have to do an extra year in Glasgow than elsewhere, but maybe it is worth it.

Sorry just realised that was rude singling out Drampa, only that she was the first to mention Glasgow. Clearly a lot of knowledge on this thread, so would love to hear from anyone who knows about biochem at Glasgow, York and Sheffield.

Just revising an old thread - looking for some advice on possible Clearing choices for Biological / Biomedical Sciences

After York / Warwick my daughter likes UEA for sure but wondering about Royal Holloway as an alternate (maybe even Aston)

Welcome thoughts

Nottingham dropped their offers to (I think) BBC in Clearing last year. The C could be in Biology as well.

ColouringPencils · 04/02/2025 19:08

I think someone posted the other day a link to courses that were in clearing in 2024, but I can't find it now.

BobtheFrog · 05/02/2025 07:47

Thanks both, its been interesting watching the Clearing grades / unis change over the last few years. And this year will be surprising too I suspect - though a lot of the published lower grades can be contextual / widening participation offers, which can be slightly misleading esp when you cross reference with the UCAS admissions data

My notes from 2024 show Clearing grades of BBB for Biology on Main Campus and BBC for the Sutton Bonnington Bio courses. Alas my daughter didn't like SB campus very much and couldn't be persuaded to look at straight Biology

I know this is an old thread, but seemed to have people on with some knowledge of the subject area. My DC has had offers through for Biomedical Science. 2 top picks are Birmingham and Newcastle Uni's but she is finding it hard to choose. Any thoughts on the Biomedical courses at those two?

TattooGuineaPig · 23/02/2025 19:33

A friend of mine's DD got into York thru clearing for biological sciences. It may be worth hanging onto that one in case they are able to show similar flexibility on results day.

What is the size of the cohort at both universities?

There were over 300 in DD's cohort at Newcastle. There was no rapport between the students and the teaching staff because they had a different lecturer for each topic, so they never got to know anyone. It was very hands off and the students are just a number. The only tutor that DD got to "know" was her dissertation tutor.

That said, DD loved Newcastle, enjoyed the course, made some good friends and graduated with a good first.

Have any of the DC on this thread firmed their options yet? Think mine is going for Glasgow.

SengaNaLenga · 25/02/2025 17:55

How funny, these are the exact three universities I had offers from twenty years ago :) An Arts subject, thought, not Bio, so afraid I can't help!
