Degree Apprenticeship form filling

Frowningprovidence · 08/10/2024 19:54

My son is filling out a number of applications for apprenticeships, and more than one has asked if he is a carer in the questions

He is a young carer but only lightly and it would naturally reduce if he was out all day. But it has impacted on his life to date

So I said to tick no as I was concerned he might be discriminated against.

Do others think that was the right option.

It might work in his favour to tick yes

I think it is information they have to report on and will make no difference to his chance of getting an apprenticeship.

Tick yes, but make sure he includes the details in the covering letter.

That's reassuring so maybe the recruiters don't see that bit.

I did wonder if he should talk about it as he's some skills /qualities that are developed from it. But then he doesn't actually like talking about it. So maybe not!

He should absolutely tick yes. Carers are an under represented group and it could work in his favour.

I think it depends on the circumstances re young carers, if its something traumatic which happened to lead to this that he might be distressed by if brought up I would vere to no. But generally would expect to have neutral or positive effect in theory at least. Also a few universities e.g. Bath give lower offers and more support to young carers so that may be worth checking as in that case would definitely put yes.
