London Unis for Psychology (that take BTEC)

Apologies, already posted this in further education before finding this forum.

Yes, I know we're hopelessly disorganised. DD18 is currently in her second year of a BTEC in psychology & Forensics. Predicted good grades, D,D,D*. Her preference is to get a job/apprenticeship in the field but I know that will be very difficult so plan B is to go to Uni. However, she doesn't want to move away (she wouldn't cope for various reasons) so we're limited to commutable ones which is London in our case.
I know we should be going to open days and are being incredibly lazy but I don't know where to start and DD is hardly motivated so I wondered if anyone had any pointers for unis that could fit the bill. Google hasn't got me too far as yet but I'm persevering.....

Birkbeck Psychology department does.

Brunel University takes Btecs for its psych course.

But as for where to start - just look up what unis there are in London (there are 17) go to their websites and see if they offer psych then check the entry requirements. To save you even more time, for BSc psych, Queen Mary does not accept Btecs and King's only accepts them in combo with A levels. That search took me about fie mins so I don't think it will take you long to check them all.

I suspect you may come up against a lot of nos tho - maybe bc of the science aspect? I am not sure as I know lots of unis and lots of courses do accept Btecs. Queen Mary for example (just checked) will accept Btecs for a lot of its courses so maybe have a look for some alternative course choices.

What apprenticeships are available in the field - I'm not aware of any. Confused

@Geminijust I've posted a link on your thread in FE to the UCAS search tool (which your DD may have found already, if she has got as far as setting up her UCAS account), where you cab filter for subject / location/ level / entry requirements etc.

Royal Holloway?

Apparently the police sometimes have apprenticeships on the Forensics side, we know someone who got into fingerprinting after completing the same course she's doing. Don't think they come up often though and are very hard to get!

These universities in London will accept BTEC qualifications for a psychology degree

  • Brunel University of London
  • London Metropolitan University
  • London South Bank University
  • Middlesex University
  • Queen Mary University of London
  • University of West London
  • University of Westminster
QGMum · 05/10/2024 20:36

Sorry correction to my list - not Queen Mary as already mentioned by pp

From what I do know about apprenticeships the candidates need to be extremely motivated. One to actually compete with the number of applicants to gain one, but also when on the course because work and independent study without the backup of a large cohort of students to do it with, isn't easy and can feel isolating.

What about mental health nursing? Guaranteed job in the field and I would assume accept Btecs

This is a really good suggestion, especially as Psychology has now become one of the most competitive courses to study and that pushes the entry requirements right up.
