How do I work out which UK universities do English with Spanish and accept AAB?

safetymatches · 22/09/2024 11:52

I mean, how do I start narrowing things down?

Google brings up quite a bit if you type in 'English with Spanish UK Universities AAB A-levels'.

safetymatches · 22/09/2024 12:06

Thanks but I am actually getting very random results and I am wondering if there's a central website that can offer me a listing of all the universities that offer this particular course for this A level result.

Maybe school/college can help?

FiveFoxes · 22/09/2024 12:11

In theory, the UCAS website should help. You can certainly search by subject and by UCAS points. It'll bring up a rough list (probably with some random subjects too- the search function isn't great).

clary · 22/09/2024 12:19

I doubt if there is any kind of central website. Many universities will offer this course though not all (some no longer offer MFL and some offer a limited number of joint options).

One thing to do is to consider location which is usually a factor - so city or campus (or campus near a city)? Wales, Scotland, or only England? Central or is further flung OK?

I would think for AAB and MFL you are probably looking at RG and similar level unis - maybe Newcastle and Sheffield tho rather than Durham and Oxford.

Having quickly searched I cannot see anything likely at Nottingham or Durham; Sheffield offers English and modern cultures with ABB; Leeds offers modern languages and English with AAB; Bristol offers English and Spanish with AAA (but lower contextual offer if that works).

It doesn't take very long to find out by searching uni websites tbh. That took me about 5 minutes.

Withless · 22/09/2024 12:20

The Uni Guide website has filters by grades

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 22/09/2024 12:23

WhatUni is a good starting place. https://www.whatuni.com/degree-courses/search?q=english-and-spanish-&score=0,136

Does she have a unifrog account via school?

Withless · 22/09/2024 12:24

Do they actually have these grades or are they predicted? If predicted then make sure you apply to an AAA aspirational as well.

PoodlesForeverLove · 22/09/2024 12:28

I just ran a google search for "uk universities undergrad English & Spanish" and got a bunch. You'll need to go into individual dept web pages to see their entry reqs, but the combined course exists in these places at least, possibly more:

Manchester
Cardiff
Surrey
Edinburgh
Queens, Belfast
Warwick
Lancaster
Plymouth
Middlesex

PermanentTemporary · 22/09/2024 12:29

In my view it's not going to happen with a single search. I needed a notebook and a couple of spreadsheets plus two evenings to do a list of unis that did the course my ds was interested in, with their standard offers. And yes I could have made him do it...but it was just a list, he took it from there.

I'd start by looking at university ranking tables - as many as you can. I personally ignored the Guardian one because they rare student satisfaction too heavily imo. I did a late retraining degree and thought the things surveys of student satisfaction asked for were a lot of nonsense.

Once I'd looked at 3 or 4 tables, it was becoming clearer which were the top 15 or so unis for his subject, and once I'd added their standard offers, I could see maybe 10 that would range from very ambitious to good safe options for him. He'd ruled out London very early which helped. Then I handed the list to him and told him to start looking and to tell me about open days he fancied. We visited 4 together and he saw another 2 on his own.

See this is why I am distrustful of search websites in general for this kind of thing - Leeds, Bristol and Sheffield all offer a course as per my quick search and they are not on that list.

The best thing IMHO is as I suggested to narrow it down by area/uni type and then look at the websites of those ones.

Also, I am going into each and every option and I cannot clearly see this offering for Edinburgh or Plymouth. My head hurts.

UCAS is the official list of all courses in the UK. The search tends to include too many things (eg Spanish Law and English Law) but it will have all the courses you're seeking.

PhotoDad · 22/09/2024 13:06

Then when you have a shortlist, have a look at discoveruni.gov.uk which is where the other sites get their data anyway!

Drivingoverlemons · 22/09/2024 13:26

The Edinburgh Spanish and English MA (four year) course says:

Standard entry requirement
The standard entry requirement is:

  • SQA Highers: AAAA (achievement by end of S5 preferred). BBB must be achieved in one year of S4-S6.
  • A Levels: AAA.
  • IB: 37 points with 666 at HL - 34 points with 655 at HL.
Minimum entry requirement The minimum entry requirement for widening access applicants is:
  • SQA Highers: ABBB by end of S6. BBB must be achieved in one year of S4-S6.
  • A Levels: ABB.
  • IB: 34 points with 655 at HL.
Kerning · 22/09/2024 13:26

UCAS probably your best bet as someone upthread said.

These search results are for:

Sept 2025 entry
Full-time undergraduate
Search term 'spanish english'
Subjects Spanish and English
Tariff points 136 - 144+ (136 points is AAB I think)

Some universities will advertise 'Modern Language and English' as they offer various languages so you may have look at individual websites.

Pinkissmart · 22/09/2024 13:33

Search on UCAS for Modern Foreign Language and English, or Combined Honours

clary · 22/09/2024 13:33

Yeh I can't see any MFL offer at Plymouth uni tbh.

OK I eat my words and the UCAS website as linked by PPs is probably the best bet then.

Any thoughts on what kind of uni @safetymatches ? People here have a lot of knowledge (I mean between us) and may be able to make useful suggestions.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 22/09/2024 16:43

I completely agree. You eliminate by distance, campus/non-campus, near big city or not first. That cuts out quite a chunk. English and Spanish and various combinations of it are offered at loads of Unis so there would still be plenty of choice. Then look at each website and see what grades they want.

I think it's important to actually look at what each course offers on the website because every one is different.

Then attend open days if possible. Never underestimate the importance of a student liking the vibe of a Uni.

I think the student needs to realise that you have to put effort into the process, don't take short cuts because you're going to spend a lot of money on it so you should try to choose the best option for you.

Misfitkickedoutonthestreet · 22/09/2024 17:29

Agree with the others - it’s a degree that’s offered in a lot of places so narrow down by city / location / type of campus / etc. does she want big city life, quiet historic town, up north / down south / West Country / East / Scotland / whatever? That should narrow it down massively.

DD is applying for MFL only and wants small and pretty - wasn’t interested in Leeds, Sheffield, Southampton, Cardiff etc so that ruled those out instantly. Maybe you can do the same?

Your reading comprehension is lacking. I didn't say it was a comprehensive list, but that there may well be more.

Really you're starting to sound like a bit of a brat.

Christ, is there ANY thread where randoms don't go off-tangent and start sniping at each other? This one rather unusual though, aimed at lovely, helpful clary.
