Can anyone advise on any of these please?

DD likes different bits of each one!

I’d got for Nottingham. Great city, lots of student life, best ranked econ dept.

Luffers is in the middle of nowhere.

Exeter is a MN fave but the town is dull, students are a bit posho.

The Exeter campuses are lovely and the teaching is really great. Dc thought Nottingham city was grim when we visited, although he liked Birmingham (which I thought was grim!) so who knows.

Nottingham. Nicest campus, most vibrant student life.

Wow Luffers is getting a bit of unfair grief - "more of a business school" - and "in the middle of nowhere"?

It's a small place but it's also a great uni that is always highly rated. And it's in the middle of the country actually. Not a big city so if you want that go to Nottingham or Brum or Leeds.

Actually of the OP's options I would go with Nottingham as long as you are OK with the catered accomm on campus.

I think Loughborough is a fab uni but dd declare it 'weird, with a cliquey vibe'

I think that's just because she realised she wouldn't get into any of the sports teams tbh

I also want to add (for balance and so as not to seem like some demented Lboro advocate) that it's not really fair to dismiss Exeter as "full of poshos" - if that's an issue skip Lboro as well as most of DS's mates seem to be £££ and have gone to private school. He's fine with that tho.

I think that's going to be increasingly a fact of uni life tbh as the student loan goes down in real terms, CoL goes up and the income level for parental contribution to kick in remains ludicrously low as well.

@Ghilliegums fair enough about the weird vibe - you feel what you feel (DD hated Sheffield uni for no very good reason tbh). The sports teams are very inclusive tho - there really is a sport offer at a level for all. True I guess that you won't get on the BUCS team for athletics or rugby or football unless you are really top class tho. Try American football!

DS absolutely loves Lboro and does Economics there. Straight A / A* student too. Not sporty in any way shape or form but loves campus, several societies, the pubs in town, the accommodation. He probably can be described as weird and cliquey so maybe that's why he loves it 😂

My DN goes to Eton - apparently they all go to Exeter according to him. So avoid there if you don’t want a load of Eton boys descending on your daughter.

Of course they don't all go to Exeter. All the boys I know at Eton have gone to Oxford, the US or St Andrews. I'm sure a few do, but it's unlikely they will be descending on dd, unless she actively likes one of them, which of course is not beyond the bounds of possibility.

KazzaV · 21/09/2024 20:16

My DS who has just finished at Exeter is definitely not a “posho” and has friends from all over and international students . I’m sure tha moneyed element is there but he didn’t mix with them,
His only complaint would be the relative geographical isolation in the UK - especially for sport - heading to Southampton, Cardiff , Bristol and Plymouth .

Gdry · 21/09/2024 21:52

My DS's UG had people from Eton. He got along with them just fine.

Penguinsa · 24/09/2024 19:51

I have a DD about to read Economics, also had 3 A stars for predicted and work in economics. First thought is why is she not applying to a top 10 choice, is it lack of confidence or she genuinely has reasons to rule all 10 out though they are very different universities and courses.

I would also really look at course content especially options and maths content. Of those I would go with Exeter but Nottingham is ranked slightly higher. DD ruled it out as too remote and too full of posh party people but she loves parties and think would have joined those parties straight away.

My DD applied to Oxford, LSE, Bath, Bristol for Economics courses adding them 2 then 1 then 1. For someone who dislikes big cities Bath could work and well regarded as top 10 choice.

Nottingham is a nice campus (at least the main campus is) but it isn't a patch on Exeter. Exeter has a beautiful campus which is actually a botanical garden. And Exeter as a place is much nicer than Nottingham.
