Warwick University Experiences

DS is applying to do Computer Science and was looking to apply to Warwick, as one his choices. 2025 entry.

However anecdotally I keep hearing negative things about Pastoral care, courses and there us even a recent post on this forum about student dissatisfaction.

Am aware hearsay and "my friend's sons friend's cousin "experiences should be treated with a pinch of salt, but would be good to hear about any recent Warwick experiences. Really enjoyed the open day earlier this year. TIA

I can't advise on this personally as my son is only just about to start his degree at Warwick however I feel as though I may have also read some negativity around this a while ago. Since then I've joined the parents group on Facebook I've read nothing but positive comments there, it could be a good place to ask your question as a prospective parent. Good luck to your son!

DS did his degree and masters at Warwick - the later stages during Covid. Only positive things to say about it. We wanted somewhere DS would be happy - more important than the quality of the degree.

@Cx5 what is the warwick parents group?

Mostunexpected · 13/09/2024 12:19

The pastoral care elements vary so much between different courses/departments at the same University that unless these negative things were specifically from people taking computer science, I'd ignore them

That might have been me, I shared a link yesterday - the student satisfaction IS very low for computer science according to various sites, but that may be a covid hangover. This thread on Reddit has some students commenting

We have decided against it - but it was never his dream anyway.

Yes it's a great Facebook group and my dc has had a fab first year. It's a safe campus with everyone given campus accommodation in the first year. Leamington Spa is a bus ride away and good for clubs, shopping and pubs. At any uni it helps to join a society to extend your friendship group. The campus accommodation includes cheaper options (£5k per year) and the rent for 2nd and 3rd year is reasonable and good value compared to Bristol/Bath etc.
Many of the cohort in my dc's halls were either Oxbridge rejects at the application stage or missed Oxbridge grades on results day etc.

DS has a close friend at Warwick. He is doing economics. I don't know what yours is like but this lad is typically 'nerdy', very intelligent, doesn't drink at all and not into partying. He chose Warwick because it is an obvious choice for someone very able to study mathematical subjects. He has been fine.

He has been in halls all 3 years. He was in Roots last year and did find it noisy but got along fine. He's a pretty affable chap.

I also have ex students there and they have all done really well and enjoyed it immensely. The arts and music scene is excellent.

The campus can seem a bit out of it to some so the main off putting element seems to be travel to campus in years 2 and 3 but everyone seems to manage it.

The big scandal at Warwick a few years back was sexual harassment amongst history lads, specifically the university's handling of it.

My DS is at Warwick doing Computer Science - just about to go back there for his 2nd year.

He loves it. Wants to stay there forever, as far as I can see! I had no idea there was "student dissatisfaction"!

He has ASD and I was worried about him moving out and living independently. But he seems to be being well supported and is having a great time.

I graduated from Warwick University over 34 years ago and I loved it there and always found tutors and lecturers helpful.

Sounds similar to my son! Thank you

My ds graduated from Warwick three years ago. He didn’t rate the pastoral care, seemed to him to be a box ticking exercise rather than any actual ‘care’. His tutor asked him if he had a job lined up, he had and no further questions were asked! Seemed like a missed opportunity in terms of obtaining info that could be useful to other third years.
Accommodation was decent and ds lived in Coventry in years two and three which was good value.
