Where to add ABRSM grades in UCAS form

DS listed his ABRSM grades in his UCAS form under the primary school section. Indeed he took the exams when he was at the primary school but all the exams happened privately so I felt it was weird to see as if they were gained in school by listing there. DS said every qualification has to be listed under the school he attended even if they were gained privately.

Is he doing it correctly? Or is there any place where you can enter the qualifications you gained from your extracurriculars arranged privately?

In his personal statement, if they are relevant to his chosen subject.

WinnyMoms · 12/09/2024 03:39

it really doesn't matter that much.

clary · 12/09/2024 07:12

Yeah it doesn't matter unless he is applying to unis that ask for x number of UCAS points, in which case they will count. Otherwise unless he is applying for music-related degrees it doesn't make much difference. PS needs to be about the subject studied so agree with @CherryValley5

You used to list them with GCSEs and a levels but this was 6 years ago

redskydarknight · 12/09/2024 08:48

Is he applying for a music related course? If not, I wouldn't bother at all (mention in personal statement if you want to use them to example soft skills etc).

There’s a section in ucas to add all qualifications that carry points. Even if not applying for a points uni you never know for clearing and I’d add them why wouldn’t you? DD put her ballet on.

MikkyAAA · 12/09/2024 16:44

Thanks, everyone. It might not make a huge deal but as Investinmyself
wrote I would rather like him to add them just in case...

95% of his personal statement was about his chosen subject which is not music. He briefly wrote about what he enjoys in his free time - one of which was music but no mention of the grades.

May I ask you how your DD added the qualification for her ballet? DS listed his AS results under his current school name, GCSEs under junior school, and ABRSM exam results under primary school. Is he doing it correctly? Or is there any other section to list for outside school qualifications?

It was 12 months ago so I can’t remember exactly. I can recall sitting with dd and trying to figure out. I think you need to add school then add the qualification from a quick search.

If you scroll down this ballet link it explains.

It’s a waste of precious characters in the PS to list unrelated qualifications. I would also argue that instead of listing hobbies he could add details of books/articles he has read that are relevant to the course and why he found them interesting / inspiring. They are really not interested in anything else, and that’s even when they read the PS - in the majority of applications for the majority of courses at the majority of universities they will make an offer if the predicted grades meets the requirement without reference to the PS

Investinmyself · 12/09/2024 17:07

It definitely doesn’t go in the PS. It’s a separate section for qualifications. Mind made no mention in PS as it was totally irrelevant.
Why mention it? If she had failed her A levels she had enough for foundation version of her course through clearing just from the ballet points. It was a sort of in family joke when she was having a worry this summer about her grades. She met her offer A level wise so not needed but you never know.

MikkyAAA · 12/09/2024 17:09

I think that was what DS did! Thank you!! But I will check the link with DS to make sure he understands what to do. He says he does, and I might be worrying unnecessarily but I prefer worrying and double-checking now to regretting later...

I always thought DS had to entre the points but what I understand now is he enters all the information without points and once the completed form is submitted UCAS will work out the total points based on the information he provided, right?

From memory I think you just entered qualification and grade. It’s only grade 6 and above for RAD that you can enter.

Londonmummy66 · 12/09/2024 17:52

You only enter grades 6 upwards as they are the ones that attract a UCAS tariff. They can be relevant - DD1 had an EE offer for conservatoire and was told if she missed it to et in touch and they'd change it to points (which her music exams would cover). DD2 had a miss on results day and got an offer (which she subsequently declined) from an RG uni that used her music grades to make the points up.
