Film production

Any insights/experience/recommendations for practical film making degree courses. Not looking for academic film studies. Film production at Portsmouth looks good, as does Winchester and Kingston/Roehampton. We are south east so these areas are easier access. If anyone has any first hand knowledge would love to hear from you.

Bournemouth and Falmouth both run well regarded Film production courses. Worth having a look at both of those.

Herbie56 · 08/09/2024 18:55

Thanks Winny, these are more post grad options I think.

Thanks Mimble, I have looked into these, Falmouth a bit far and Bournemouth (presume you mean the arts uni) seems less popular these days?
But I’m happy to hear from anyone with a positive experience!

Bournemouth U, rather than the Arts U has some interesting stuff going on.

I knew a couple of people who taught there who had had respected careers in London film and radio, and who continued with their own work. Though don't know much about the courses BU offers. It attracts Masters students from across the world.

Maybe too far or not the type of course you’re after, but The London Screen Academy in Islington, North London runs a one-year Film Production course for under 18 year olds and it’s free!

There’s also bursaries for some 19 year olds.

Very strong industry links as LSA was set up by people in the film & TV industry to encourage diversity of backgrounds in the industry. I know several young people who did it and really enjoyed it.

Bournemouth is highly regarded, and also Newport (Wales).

WriterOfWrongs · 08/09/2024 21:30

CORRECTION: I meant to say the course at LAA is for 18 year olds or under 19 year olds, it’s not for under 18s.

They have other courses - the majority of their students - for 16-18 year olds.

HotCrossBunplease · 08/09/2024 21:34

I thought that film production was managing the financial, logistical and operational side of making a film, and film directing was the actual artistic job of making the content

Are both taught together on these courses?

igglu · 08/09/2024 22:00

My eldest is off to university of creative arts at Farnham to do film. They cover all the different aspects of it for the first two years and then specialise in one area for third year.

Herbie56 · 08/09/2024 22:32

Good luck to your eldest Igloo, I’ve heard Farnham UCA is good. Nice town too and close to London.

hotcrossbun, the terminology is confusing, but a BA Hons degree in film production covers all aspects of producing/making a film, including direction, cinematography, editing etc… different modules and the students can decide what they want to specialise in.

A friend's daughter is at Arts Unj Bournemouth and absolutely loving it. Her mum says the uni has a good track record for getting graduates into relevant jobs.

Cookerhood · 08/09/2024 23:02

I believe the one at Bournemouth Uni is TV Production, not Film Production, if that matters.

WinnyMoms · 08/09/2024 23:04

I worked with a couple of people who did the course at Bournemouth. They started their careers as assistants to theatrical agents in London and each ended up a successful writer (different kinds of writers, but that's where they landed).

pinkdelight · 08/09/2024 23:10

Northern Film School in Leeds is good. University of the Arts London and Goldsmiths also worth a look.

pinkdelight · 08/09/2024 23:13

Actually goldsmiths is more post grad too so ignore that but UAL does an undergrad in Film Practice. Definitely try for NFTS after though, it does make a difference.

Herbie56 · 09/09/2024 08:06

Thanks Pink. We’re booked onto UAL open day next month, the film bit, LCC seems to be the least popular, but we’re keeping an open mind.
