Choices for Universities offering History

Winstonny · 05/09/2024 21:25

I am going to send off my UCAS form in the next week or so and I want to check the consensus here among mothers with kids doing the same or already at uni, about my choices for History. In no particular order:

York
Bristol
Edinburgh
Warwick
Kings, London

The rationale for these choices are a) course offerings & locations b) ranking of university generally. Anything else I should consider?

I have grades in hand A(star), A, A

DS2 is at York. It's very expensive.

The league tables are fascinating things, and with the drive for healthier lifestyles a definite boon for the salt industry.

CUG has been publishing tables for the past 18 years and purely from an historical perspective, as the OP is applying to study history, the attachments show the placement history for the current top 20 unis in the history subject table, plus four others for general interest only - including Hull uni which was in the top 10 for History in the table published for 2008.

Where did you find these graphs on CUG? Can't seem to find them. Really interesting.

The trouble with history is that a lot of courses have the same AAA requirements. Oxford, Exeter, Bristol, York...
An EPQ can be a good thing for giving some leeway with that.

Not a lot of top and Russell Group give any offer change for EPQ.

Re Durham - rarely will they negotiate when offer isn’t achieved

Piggywaspushed · 08/09/2024 09:52

Nearly all of them reduce offer for EPQ!

there is a data download option for all years, and given year, overall and by subject. You’ll need to create your own graphs from the csv data though. 😄

Piggywaspushed · 08/09/2024 09:55

This OP does have grades in hand, as a reminder...

Thanks, found it. You created your own graphs? 😳
For personal use? Or are you a careers advisor etc?

boys3 · 08/09/2024 10:30

@TheJollyCoralEagle just a bit of fun, they only took a few minutes. Although I probably could have got AI to create them for me, but where would be the fun in that?😀 Two of my DC also completed their degrees in History so there’s a bit of interest from that perspective too.

Piggywaspushed · 08/09/2024 10:32

boys is a MN graph making legend!

Makes sense. Although to be fair rankings are a bit of a minefield as you will see from my thread I started re the Guardian rankings out yesterday 😁

boys3 · 08/09/2024 10:48

@TheJollyCoralEagle the Graun certainly needs the full condiment set applied.

Piggywaspushed · 08/09/2024 11:20

I quite like aspects of the Grauniad tables , such as staff ratios and spend per student, plus the teaching quality one can be interesting - but this year is particularly - ermmm- unusual.

It's the only league table that actually recognises my discipline exists, mind.

Exeter is now AAB

Yes Bath does this and have also just started their own summer internships.

As it goes my DS has just had a uni summer internship. He does history at Birmingham.

DD is applying for History with Birmingham on her longlist so this is interesting. Has your DS found the uni generally good for careers support? How common are uni-based internships?

Piggywaspushed · 08/09/2024 14:01

Birmingham has a good reputation for employability and, as far as I know, a good careers service. DS hasn't engaged with them much yet, but he did get some advice. His internship, funnily enough , was doing some sociology research and overseen by the English department! There are lots of them, and they are well advertised.

That’s just wrong.

Piggywaspushed · 08/09/2024 18:09

If you say so! Plenty of them do - certainly York.
It's immaterial anyway, as the OP has grades in hand.

ToBeDetermined · 08/09/2024 22:01

And it has been explained to me that the surge in popularity for St. Andrews is tied in directly to the fact that Prince William went there, rather than being based on the quality of the teaching / courses, which doesn't really sound like a compelling enough reason to me.

What a load of bollocks. The University rankings are not based on popularity.
You have fallen for a bit of English supremacist twaddle.

It really doesn't matter either way, as I'm not applying to St. Andrews.

Are you aware that Edinburgh is a 4 year course. Do you want 33% more debt for fees and living costs?

Yes, I take your point on that. Money is a consideration and that choice is a bit of a wild card. It is the one place I didn't visit and is much further than the rest. Kings also has similar issues.

5starzz · 09/09/2024 14:51

It depends if Edin gives you the opportunity (or not) to use that extra year as a 'year abroad/work placement' either working or studying productively and cost effectively that will enhance your experiences and employability. I think you end up with an MA though anyway?

Stowickthevast · 09/09/2024 14:56

The 4 years can be a positive thing at Edinburgh if you're not entirely sure what you want to do. It's far more like the American system. You study 3 Arts or Social science subjects for the first two years before specializing. And you do get an MA. I ended up with a degree in something completely different to what I started off studying.

It's also a beautiful city to live in but not that much campus life.

Have you looked at the International History and Politics degree at Leeds? Its quite a unique integrated single honors and does modules on Japan.
