Clothes Airers

Hi my dd is off to uni & I’m wondering about washing quite a few of her clothes can’t be tumbled dried , tbh things like her jogging bottoms I drip dry hung out in the garden , hoodies will shrink in the tumble dryer as well

I know that a lot of halls don’t allow clothes horses due to damp

How do your kids manage please? Do they have airers I’ve heard that the rooms get very hot

I've just checked DSs "daily essentials" list he was sent from Uni, and it actually has clothes airer on it.

Mind you, it also has "fancy dress items"...!

WriterOfWrongs · 07/09/2024 23:36

@PatriciaHolm where’s he going that has “fancy dress items” on it under “daily items”? Grin

My guesses:

Oxford/Cambridge
Durham
Exeter

Wildcard guess: Hull

I wouldn't use a domestic tumble dryer. I find they take ages and damage the clothes or make them fusty. But the big launderette sized ones typically available in halls are fine as there's so much space for clothes to whirl around in.

Washing less is going to be part of the solution here! I know many on MN like to wash everything after one wear but jeans, jumpers etc can be left much longer and spot wash stains unless actually sweaty.

Just checked DS’ accommodation contract and he is allowed a non-heated airer in his room, but not in the kitchen 😅 might be worth checking, OP. I paid £40 for one in Dunelm but yesterday Asda Living had some for £16…

DS has got fancy dress on the list for Loughborough 😀

DD had an airer in halls in Sheffield and all the flatmates often put them in the kitchen.

I've bought mine a small, normal (as in not heated) concertina airer for the communal kitchen/living room.

They are allowed in the communal area (and seem to have a dedicated area for them going by the open day and photos). Dehumidifiers are not allowed.

Oh, and my sons halls are cleaned and kitchen bins emptied twice a week, communal areas only, individual bedrooms and ensuites aren't cleaned.

It's a rite of passage to have to go out to buy and then haul a clothes airer back on the bus and walk it up a huge hill in the second week in.

Let her figure it out and shrink all her clothes.

Soontobe60 · 12/09/2024 06:38

Blimey, I never even considered how my DDs would dry their clothes when they went to uni! I assumed they were capable of figuring it out for themselves. They’d both become familiar with the mysteries of laundry well before they went - what can or can’t be tumble dried, white bras go grey on the first wash no matter what you put them with, too much powder will make you itch etc.

roastedrapidly · 12/09/2024 06:38

Both mine had airers in their rooms (uni halls are usually so overheated anyway) but a dehumidifier is a good idea.
But, honestly they mostly used the tumble dryers, I can't say they complained about things getting ruined.
They are students and weren't very precious about their washing...they were too busy playing beer pong I think.

@SuperSaint yep that's it ;-)
