Working at a university

What's it like to work at a university in professional support staff?

Outside of work to what extent can you get involved in "university life" given that you are a staff member and not a student? I assume the work is too time consuming.

I worked somewhere that gave staff a 90% discount on tuition fees! A very high ranking and oversubscribed university. You do have to stay on a couple of years after graduation otherwise you would have to pay it back. Some people applied for admin jobs just to get this discount (and were also brilliant colleagues).

I've worked in admin roles in Universities for almost a decade. It depends on where you work but I feel
my pay is good and I like my job. I have very busy times where I might work late and it is quieter during August.

There are opportunities where I work to go to various talks or join activities if there is time. Where I currently work there isn't a them and us culture with support staff and admin staff. A lot of us have undergraduate degrees, some have masters or even PHDs.

As a poster said before some universities are having financial difficulties so it may not be a good time to start working at one.

Overall it just depends where you work and what you do as there are lots of different PS roles. I've stayed where I am for many years because it's been a good place to work

That should say there isn't a them and is culture with academic and support staff
