Son's GCSEs

So my son has failed his GCSEs. He got 3s in everything so needs to resit his maths and English next year.

I understand he can do this with a college course but I am a little confused as to when he would do the exam resits. Some people have mentioned November and others have mentioned June.

Ask the college? He won’t be the only one there doing this.

There are resits in early November, yes. If they pass at this point they don't need to stay on the resit course. If they don't pass, they keep studying until June.

I asked about this for my DS at college. The teacher said that they could resit in November but by that stage they would have had no teaching in the particular subject since May/June and will then only have a month's worth of revision so many go backwards. My DS got a 4 in English and 3 in maths so he's doing a gcse resit programme as he needs a 5 in English to do what he wanted. I think if your DS has failed everything he'd be better off either doing a L2 vocational programme and resitting English and Maths in June or doing a full GCSE resit programme.

It depends on the college, the last one I worked at put them in for GCSE at every opportunity. Personally I thought that wasn't a good idea, trying to get someone from a 1 to a 4 in a moth is crazy, but that's how the college worked.

How demoralising if you fail again and again!

I think it's only maths and English that have November resits, the rest will have to wait till next June. I assume he's got a place at College to do resits? Or a level 2 course alongside some GCSEs?

My son had to resit Math at college and it was some point during the year but definitely not as early as November. He had math classes as part of his course. The college will know.

I've been reading my local sixth forms, one of them said a November resit if you got a 3, otherwise next July.

I hope he gets sorted, I am in the midst of trying to sort my ds as his results dropped.

If he was close to a 4 in Maths or English he may be entered for a November resit, but otherwise a full year of GCSE resit is indicated. The college may suggest doing a level 2 BTEC with Maths and English, and it is worth considering if they offer a subject he finds interesting. This would involve fewer exams, spread out over the year, with coursework as well. If he does a GCSE resit course he will need to do 5 subjects and pass them all. Some colleges prefer to keep this option for those who had a reason for doing less well than expected- eg illness or moving schools- or whose results were all near misses. They will have started enrolling already, so you need to make some calls.

Thanks everyone. They said he would have the option to resit in November but I think he needs until June. He's all signed up along with an electrical level 2 course. Going to be a busy year for him!

Hi. My brother needs to re-sit his maths and English gcse exams. Anyone used any reputable online courses to help with revision?
