Leeds Uni Accommodation - Hepworth Lodge

Zimunya · 23/08/2024 11:05

Hi Mumsnetters. I would grateful for any insights or wisdom on this uni accommodation (Hepworth Lodge). I don't know Leeds at all, but on Google maps, this looks quite far away from the uni. A bit worried about her getting home after evenings at the union etc. Aside from safety, any other tips from parents (or students) in the know? I'd be grateful for all insights and thoughts :)

Hello- is she at Leeds Uni or Beckett? I’ve no experience of the actual accommodation however work in Leeds and went to uni there too.
It’s opposite side of the road to Leeds city college, you basically walk up past the college (handover way) onto Clarendon Rd and you are at the back of the Dental hospital , then slightly way up hill and you are at the law area / back of the main uni campus.
as with every city you need to be cautious at night, not walk home alone and stay in groups. However it’s a fine location otherwise. (Might b noisy as it’s by the inner ring road / burley road etc)

Also just down from where she is on Burley Rd there are huge student accom buildings so lots of students around

Ladybug6757755 · 23/08/2024 11:14

She can also cut across the main campus to cut off a lot of the main roads as well

Zimunya · 23/08/2024 11:14

Thanks @Ladybug6757755, that's reassuring. She will be at Leeds Uni, not Beckett.

@Zimunya , also join the university of Leeds parents facebook group and you could ask there.

Zimunya · 23/08/2024 21:20

Thanks @tennissquare - I’m not actually on FB (Mumsnet is my only social media fix!)

@Zimunyadid your daughter stay at this hall? Been offered it for my son in September. Thanks

Zimunya · 18/08/2025 09:32

@mrsnjw - yes, she did, and it turned out to be really good. The security aspect was really great - barred / gated entrance and 24 hour reception desk. Which block will your son be in? I understand that the room sizes and layout differ from block to block. Feel free to pm me if you prefer. She was in Block C, in a flat with three guys and three girls (including her), and she had an absolute ball. She also had a (tiny) bathroom in her room, which was great. They had a shared kitchen and lounge, which was a good size too. On the whole, the only negative was that the lift was out of order a fair amount of time. Not an issue for her as she was not too high up, and is young and fit, but something to consider nonetheless.

I don’t have that on mine, I’ve logged in. Could you pm me :)

Strange
was it safe at night to walk home. I see lots of hotels and casinos around there. I’m probably overthinking all of this!

Zimunya · 19/08/2025 08:37

@mrsnjw - certainly the guys in the flat walked home alone. I can't say whether that was wise or not as I'm not their mums. She only went out with friends, and therefore always walked home with at least one other person. If it was very late they would take an Uber and share the cost.

You’re nearly right except Leeds City College is now at Quarry Hill, near Leeds Playhouse. The site on Woodhouse Lane was demolished in 2019/20 and is now more student accommodation

mrsnjw · 20/08/2025 17:04

@Wadadliis the area safe to walk around at night?

I’m not sure of that side of the inner ring road but as a Leeds resident of eight years, I walk around Leeds city centre day and night and feel perfectly safe. I will also be an undergraduate at The University of Leeds in September and can’t wait!

Once your child makes friends it’s doubtful they’ll be travelling to uni from their accommodation alone. Leeds is a fabulous city and many students remain to live there permanently, inc a friend’s daughter who’s encouraging her Essex residing parents to move to West Yorkshire

mrsnjw · 20/08/2025 17:11

We are in Hertfordshire on the Essex boarders. We are in a small village. It will be so different to where we live but so excited for him having a city experience as I grew up in the east end!

Wadadli · 20/08/2025 17:13

Here’s a map of the route - it’s less than a mile

Wow it’s very close to the centre which will be good. He will based at the sports campus a bit further out. Roll out of bars and into bed!

This is exactly our experience. DD loves Leeds and the North. There's no way she will willingly live in the South East again. She is a walking Leeds tourist board - the restaurants are so much nicer, everything is cheaper, the people are much nicer....and so on.

I will also add that she to go to A&E one Friday night (she wasn't drunk and hadn't done anything stupid) and she was full of praise for the staff there - who were absolutely lovely to her, and apparently had to deal with a lot of drunk and abusive people and did so with courtesy and compassion. So, shout out to any NHS staff at Leeds - you're amazing!
