Clearing for maths / maths & stats

I meant to keep an eye on clearing places available this year as a data point (recognising they won’t necessarily be the same next year). Did anyone keep track of which unis had maths places in clearing by any chance? Would be interested to hear, thank you.

I had a look for tracking purposes and don’t recall there being as many options as usual. Exeter didn’t seem to be in clearing for uk students and they have been for several years previously.

Yeah - I think most would have been snapped up early doors hence my wondering if anyone looked in real time. By now some unis have removed those places that have been filled. I can see Lancaster and Southhampton have/had places eg

Also wondering if anyone’s DC actually went the route for maths and could share info on what grades were accepted, if they were lower than the standard offer.

Southampton and Cardiff definitely were. Friend's child needed them as missed Exeter offer.

Liverpool and Newcastle. DD got into Newcastle with A (Maths) B C (Further Maths) C . Newcastle was her insurance but for a different course.

tisallabitofafaff · 17/08/2024 17:27

Newcastle clearing seemed to go very quickly.

I looked at clearing for Maths at 8am on Thursday out of interest

From what I recall

Durham definitely had maths places

Manchester

Most of the Scottish and Welsh unis

Lancaster, Liverpool, and a few others like Sussex, Brighton, and a few others I can't remember

Durham, Bristol - clearing places at A(star),A(star),A which was also their standard offer. It is anoption for those trading up after better than expected results.
Exeter I believe was A(star),A,A but a shade less if you did a half subject, e.g. maths and economics.

ClipTap · 18/08/2024 04:48

Yes Bristol did have clearing places for maths

ClipTap · 18/08/2024 04:49

There were loads of places for Maths and another subject

ClipTap · 18/08/2024 04:50

Mainly languages I noticed

O2HaveALittleHouse · 18/08/2024 05:03

I also heard that Warwick were relaxing their grade offers if students missed their grades.
Given that their standard offer was 3 x A(star), that might only mean a drop to 2 x A(star), A - it’s hard to tell if they didn’t go into clearing.

O2HaveALittleHouse · 18/08/2024 05:05

@ClipTap Not many with Maths and FM also have a language so that’s not a great surprise! It’s a hard combination to fill.

UniDaysAcoming · 18/08/2024 14:27

I checked on the 14th and both York and Exeter were there for Maths. (Not Maths and Stats).

UniDaysAcoming · 18/08/2024 14:31

Warwick did drop the requirements - DS had an A instead of A star in FM but still got accepted (he has 2 A stars and 2 A so still a great result).

Hi, I’m glad to hear it and congrats to your son who more than deserves his place. The Warwick offer of 3xA(star) put off many though - it’s insanely high even in a world of very high offers.

Sashamia · 18/08/2024 21:15

RG unis including Leicester, Leeds, Queen Mary UoL still have Maths in Clearing, mostly at BBB-BBC

Warwicks standard offer wasn't 3 A star for maths

It was A star maths A star FM A A any other subject

If students did well in TMUA or MAT they only needed A star A star A

There are also contextual offers so you can drop a grade in some instances

Also the boundaries were higher this year for some subjects so dropping a grade wouldn't have mattered in some instances if say they did well in their MAT and the grade was dropped for chemistry

ClipTap · 19/08/2024 05:22

Warwick definitely didn't go into clearing for maths

It did for a couple of humanity type subjects though

See I think this is completely fair and I'm happy for your DS getting his place

Lancaster generally has most subjects in clearing which is unusual for such a highly ranking university. It’s because they operate a major minor system where in the first year (which doesn’t count) you do up to three subjects which can be completely unrelated). So they have a lot more flexibility around courses and students often change to one of their minor subjects at the end of the first year.
