University open days

Do you stay over so you can visit the town as well as the uni? I suspect that there won’t be time to do both on the same day. Or do you just focus on the uni?

Some people do if they have come a long way.

WriterOfWrongs · 16/08/2024 22:49

We always looked at the town too, which meant staying over if far from home.

When travelling to a Sheffield open day, we stayed over in Leeds to be able to have a look around Leeds & Leeds university on a non-open day get a feel for it, and then travelling to Sheffield the next morning. So that’s an option.

EwwSprouts · 16/08/2024 22:53

DS was only really keen on seeing the university. I remember at Sheffield we saw the dept, student union and accommodation and I suggested we took a look at the city centre late afternoon. His response was 'why? I don't do shopping'. We didn't stay overnight except when we went to Scotland. So I would say take a steer from your DC.

UnimaginableWindBird · 17/08/2024 09:26

A lot of the places DD is interested in are a long journey away, so we stay overnight if we can't there by 11am using public transport. I'm not quite sure what we are going to do now that the train strikes have been announced.

PartoftheBand · 17/08/2024 10:09

For DD, staying overnight or not depended on the time/ distance to each location. Seeing the city as well as just the university was very important to her and there was always an hour or two left after open day activities to do so.

SwitchUs · 17/08/2024 10:29

Can I ask a related question please. Are they always on a Saturday? Dd has a Saturday job so this is going to be an issue

PartoftheBand · 17/08/2024 11:15

Mostly on Saturdays but there are a few on week days and Sundays.

Mawak · 17/08/2024 11:17

We only did day trips for DS as all within 3 hrs drive.

It would have consumed too much time and money otherwise.

We know some who traveled up to Durham from Home Counties on the day, but it was a 9am start so this seemed bonkers. Travel Lodge accommodation (former police station) was basic and really overpriced because of the open day. We didn’t really see the city that much because we traveled up after school. There’s likely to be limit to how many days off for open days they are allowed which was the reason for the timing. DC and I went back for the offer holder day. The main reason I went with him was so I could have a look round the city. The secondary reason was to do it in one day we left on a train at 5:50am and I thought he might like company.

NB he didn’t make them his form offer

We have only been to Exeter so far - stayed overnight as we wanted to have time to look at the city.

Also staying over for York and Durham. Although I am hoping train strikes get cancelled. York we are going up Thursday night coming back Friday night - so as long as the trains don't finish too early Friday we will be ok.

Durham is a Saturday and we could only go Saturday morning as she has a gig she cannot miss on Friday. If we have to drive I am looking at a 3.30/4 am start.....
