Hi how much allowance do you give your kids a week at uni ? My dd hasn’t got a loan

How long's a piece of string?!
There will be a hundred different answers to this depending on where the uni is, catered/self catering, including rent/bills and whether they need to travel to campus
Also what are you expecting the allowance to cover - just food? Or toiletries, clothes, travel, phone, gym, social outings, course materials, car expenses etc.
Also will they have a job to pay for some of it?

Taking accommodation costs out of it, people seem to be giving 50-100 if self catered. Of course it depends on where and what you are still willing to pay for (phone etc).

If they're self-catered can they cook and know how to budget?

Scissorsisters · 16/08/2024 07:43

Indeed, how long is a piece of string!

FWIW mine get minimum loan and live off that, and I pay their rent. If they want more money they work.

Why aren't you getting a loan (sorry off track).
My dd is getting her £4700 maintenance to live on which works out at £117 per week to budget on. Family and I will also continue send her the £250 per month allowance she already gets. She has a job and is quite hard working. I think its too much really, as I'll already pay her accommodation, which includes WiFi, TV licence and gym. I already pay her phone and car expenses, but she'll have to buy her own petrol and pay for her own parking pass.
