A level results day 2024

How’s everyone else feeling about results day? I’ve got one at uni already and 2nd dd hoping to go to Kent in September. She seems ok about it at the moment although think that will change as it gets closer. Me I’m so keeping my fingers crossed she gets what she wants, I know there will always be other options but she loved the open day. Going to struggle with this one going though as it has been a real journey to get to where she is.

DC didn’t get predicted grades by a small margin (AAB prediction to ABB outcome) but still got an offer for her first choice course and uni. Lots of her friends doing very aspirational degrees have been left disappointed this year - not sure what’s happened but it feels like the end of the world to her and her friends right now who all planned on celebrating hard tonight. I have promised her that it will all work out for them in the end and that it’s ok to still celebrate her own success. Sending lots of love to all those parents who are managing disappointment - it can be such a tough time.

Feeling a bit flat here. DS got into his insurance choice which is on our hometown. Unfortunately his results were way off for his first choice and that course wasn't on the clearing list.

Most of his friends and his girlfriend got their first choice and are moving away. I think he's feeling disappointed in himself. I'm trying to boost him but it's sad to see him feeling low.

I feel responsible in that he based his choices on (I feel) over-ambitious predicted grades and we should have pushed him look at lower offers.

I'm super proud of him but worry he's not happy.

At least we don't now have to spend the next month frantically getting him ready to move out! Every cloud!

My ds was in exactly the same position two years ago. He was so miserable and all because one of his grades was a B! Shock Horror 🙄
He had his second choice course and uni place but we knew it wasn't right for him, he just felt like he had to follow the herd.

Honestly, we told him not to go to uni and encouraged him to take a gap year. He ended up travelling with a gap year company and it's the best thing we ever did! I can't tell you what he's doing now unfortunately as it's very outing, but his life is on a totally different trajectory. If you want anymore details please feel free to DM me.

DS did not get offer from either first choice or insurance for CompSci - he was literally one grade below what was needed for his insurance choice, and they just said no. Had A in EPQ as well. Gutted. Meanwhile insurance university (Bath) has the same 'full' CompSci course in clearing for international students. It feels very unfair. He's managed to scrape an offer from a lower-ranked uni and an offer for 2025 from another one but not sure he'll take up either. I must say it seems quite cruel to expect kids who just received the rejection news this morning after months of anticipation to start ringing round unis immediately looking for spaces, only to get rejected multiple times from those too. I'm not from the UK but to me the system seems very strange and unnecessarily stressful.

My ds was in the same boat last year rejected by both his CS choices. His insurance by one grade. He was so so stunned. It was so hard driving him home and making him start to phone clearing straight away, I felt guilty but it was the right thing to do. There wasnt much available for CS last year but he managed a get a place at a good uni and and has loved it there. It has all worked out really well but I will never forget how difficult that morning was for him.

Good luck with whatever he decides to do.

Your son must have got very good grades to only just miss out on the grades Bath required. He can still get into an excellent uni, either this year or next year. Unis would consider him an excellent applicant in 2025 with good achieved grades.

I would urge him not to make any sudden decisions. Think about whether he would prefer to take a year out and have 5 choices of uni again.

Clearing will continue for quite a few days, he could also continue looking for 2024 if he’s not happy with the offer he already has.

That's fantastic! Well done ☺️

Hi, congratulations to all your dc! I’ve been reading along.
My daughter got into her firm choice uni but didn’t get the required grades. Her predicted grades were AAA and she’s worked consistently at this level and above for the whole two years. She needed ABB and she got BBC … she’s went from being ecstatic at her ucas confirmed place email to tears at school. We’re not sure what happened as the c was in her best subject. We think she’s done amazing but she’s upset!

she’s out tonight celebrating so I’m hoping that helps.

LadeOde · 15/08/2024 16:37

@HMTheQueenMuffin You know what?? he will get to university.

Mine got A* in Economics .
He's finding it hard to be happy right now as he missed out on As in his other 2 subjects by 1 and 3 marks, but is asking for a re-mark and still got into his first choice uni, so trying to get him to focus on that.

Is there a way to look at a script without the risk of a grade changing? I guess to see if a review would be worth it?

Edited

The school can request scripts

My DS the same. Got on a degree but would rather do a degree apprenticeship. But I haven’t got a scooby when he’ll find that out. He doesn’t tell me much. He’s not in a rush to get up.

My dd just got the call - she got her Degree Apprenticeship!!

So pleased for her and she has not stopped smiling since

Fingers crossed your DS finds out soon

I love to hear this.

My Ds1 (now 14) has autism, adhd, tourettes and a fairly ordinary cognitive profile. We had an ed psych assess his IQ just before Year 7 and when we went to get the results her opening statement was (and I quote); 'Well, he'll never get to university, so you should get that idea out of your head right now'.

As it happens, once his adhd got medicated he has shone - the other stuff was hiding his abilities IMO.

he starts GCSEs next year and I am just hoping so much he does indeed get to university.

@HMTheQueenMuffin i had many an afterschool meeting with ds teachers, he would never do well in education, he couldn't read to their standard, he couldn't follow instructions, he used meter rules as swords, he climbed trees at playtime. etc.. etc.. He was diagnosed with ADHD, started medication and he excelled: achieved above average in SATS but school insisted it was a fluke and wouldn't put him in the higher level groups. I managed to move him schools in the end. From there he just flew through school (in the higher classes) did well at GCSE, got results he needed today at Alevel and got his place at Uni. One day I'd love to go back to that school and show them the achievements of the boy they said would not do well in education!

I know it.

Abundantwildstrawberries · 15/08/2024 17:37

DS was predicted 4 A star and got Astar AAA. He was one point off the A* he was required but his first choice accepted him anyway so he won’t bother to appeal.

there are so many emotions. I felt like such as asshole mother thinking “only As”.

Our last DS was in the Covid cohort when everyone got As - and we were used to easyish A*. I suspect the entire system has corrected this year.

edited because the stars turn bold

Yep. Smile I'll come back and update in a couple of years.

He's brilliant at languages. He's rubbish at school maths (bottom set) but he can calculate huge, universe level physics numbers in his head in a second.

he's also the kindest, sweetest little guy.

Can't wait to be on this thread in a few years and telling you all about his offers Smile

Congratulations to her! That’s wonderful news 🎉

Thanks for letting us know. I’ll tell my DS that offers are being made on the degree apprenticeships.

ZanyFox · 15/08/2024 17:52

Dd got her firm choice- they wanted AAA, or AAB with an A in the epq. She got Astar Astar A, with an A in the epq. Her friend got BBB and got on the same course. Dd is feeling a bit like why did I bother slaving for As!

Pinkypinkyplonk · 15/08/2024 17:57

Well I guess she will be well prepared for uni and with that work ethic may be on for a first, so all good.

aramox1 · 15/08/2024 18:10

Many commiserstions to the near misses. I honestly don't think unis should be allowed to offer differentially to international students, but I know it's a situation the funding crisis has forced them into.
Low grades here (but a good uni place, luckily)- it's a hard thing after all these years and seeing all the work!

Oh, yes, your son must feel very disappointed. I'm sorry. But have you looked at the courses/modules of other courses in detail?

My DS is going to do CS (joint with another subject). They'd already got results (IB) and had done well, and could pick from quite a few higher ranking unis.

However, after looking at the modules and courses, he went with a mid-ranked one as the course was so much more interesting. The town it's in also contributed to the choice., connection to others, transport, the surroundings too - all so important.

And yes, I get what you're saying about international fees and it being unfair.

My DS's first choice was a course at Edinburgh and there was room in clearing, he had the grades, a great PS that fitted well. However, only one course (nursing) is open to RoUK students and 254 were for international fee-paying students! The fees for the course my DS was wanted way almost £35K!!!

WombatChocolate · 15/08/2024 18:29

A statistic some might be interested in - over 80% of predicted grades are wrong. Most by far are more generous than what is achieved.

NettleTea · 15/08/2024 18:41

my boy was happy because although his grades were a mixed bag, he already had a pretty surefire offer from his first choice Uni (CDD) based on his interview and portfolio. He got an EPQ A photography A, computing B and maths D. He is also doing an art foundation as a 'gap year' to take a little more time out before heading down to Falmouth to do games programming. It was the only uni he wanted to go to, and the only thing he wanted to study since he was a little kid.
when doing what he loves he excels. and he worked really hard. They are a gateway to the next step, whatever that is, so as long as he is able to take that next step, he is not mulling over the D or the lower than expected computing (he said the first paper was the easiest paper he had ever done, but the second was the hardest)
