Grades in hand - did your kid hear sooner from Unis?

So that's my question. If you apply with your 3 A levels at A* *or A star do you get a quicker response from the universities whose admissions requirements are A star AA or AAA?

I know this varies wildly, but if anyone has had a kid in this situation and can shed some light, I'd love to know.

Not at all. She heard same speed as everyone else.

Impossible question to answer. And most universities make offers to applicants on the same basis/time scale. Universities are concerned about fairness and transparency.

Don't worry @YellowAsteroid and @MargaretThursday
I found this thread from last Sept which has a lot more detail than either of you are able to provide. And it looks like a lot of people heard very quickly when they had grades in hand.

Applying with grades ‘in hand’ | Mumsnet

Does anyone have experience of DC applying to university post-A level? I’m curious as to whether offers tend to come through more quickly than when ap...

If you thought you knew the answer, why did you bother asking?

We've given our experience, just because it isn't what you wanted to hear doesn't make it invalid.

I posted BEFORE I found that thread. Thanks anyway.

I think I saw on the student room some links to acceptance spreadsheets showing date of application, uni, course, date of offer, conditional/unconditional, grades required etc. You might be able to get an idea of the timelines for the particular uni / course that your DC are applying to. Unfortunately this was a while ago and I can't remember exactly where on the forum the link was.

YellowAsteroid · 01/08/2024 06:02

Well there’s no need to be rude about it.

sparkles79 · 01/08/2024 06:16

Bit rude of a reply OP

AquaLeader · 01/08/2024 06:48

@JesusWeptLady, you asked posters to share their own experiences. You were then incredibly rude to helpful posters who shared those experiences.

I imagine it must be very university and subject dependant.

My DD had 3 offers within a week when she applied in advance (one was less than 12 hours after she submitted). So, for those 3 universities, it wasn't really quicker to get a faster response.

However, no one is going to be able to definitively answer, unless they are in a position to compare 2 different students with exactly same results and background etc applying for same subject at same universities. Which I would not expect was the case.

mondaytosunday · 02/08/2024 23:44

My DD had three A stars and heard back within 24 hours from one and in November from Durham. But is it because she had the grades? Can't say. She doesn't didn't hear back from LSE until April.

sammyjoanne · 09/08/2024 20:42

Daughter has grades in hand and on a gap year. NTU offered her after about 3 weeks. Derby offered in 1. It depends on uni, course and the department how fast they are.

RampantIvy · 10/08/2024 12:18

Yes, DD did (in 2018). She applied to 3 universities. One acknowledged then came back with an offer and an offer of a scholarship, The one she really wanted didn't even send an acknowledgement, but offered straight away.

The third one - Manchester sent an acknowledgement, then didn't hear any further. As DD didn't want Manchester anyway she withdrew her application and accepted the offer at her first choice university. She graduated a couple of years ago.

It was a fairly popular STEM degree course available at lots of universities, but not hugely competitive to get into.

MerchSwyddEfrog · 12/08/2024 00:12

My son heard back from Leeds in about 12 hours, then heard from Bath in December, Durham in February and UCL in May! He was applying for a stem course that requires A star AA. So the answer is no he didn’t hear any sooner with grades in hand.
