My DS is now debating taking some time out from studies, I have paid his deposit at uni accommodation, will it be an issue with costs if he doesn’t actually take up the place? Don’t want to get stung as guarantor

Has he signed a lease? If so, then he will have to pay. If not, you may lose the deposit but not have to pay anything more.

He has signed an accommodation contract but if doesn’t even turn up at uni or move in then would have thought it wouldn’t be binding?

So he would be a first year?

Cozylozy · 28/07/2024 17:27

Yes he’s potentially changing his mind about going he already has his results as took a Levels last year

The simplest way to check is to read the contract which should spell it out

Is it uni halls or private accommodation?

If halls and they can re-let to someone else they may refund deposit. But check the tenancy agreement if they can't reset he may still be liable for rent too as well as the deposit. Invariably at many unis they are short of accommodation and it can be re-let.

I have looked but it doesn’t mention if you don’t actually start the course or move in, only mentions if you leave mid way

It really is only the university which will be able to confirm either way
